He's a singer, songwriter, author, poet, and multi-instrumentalist, who has been a professional musician since 1958. He plays a variety of instruments, including the guitar, harmonica, keyboards, drums, and saxophone. Featuring his characteristic growl - a unique mix of folk, blues, Irish, scat, and Celtic influences - Morrison is widely considered one of the most unusual and influential vocalists in the history of rock and roll. He has received numerous music awards during his career, including six Grammy Awards (1996–2007); inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (January 1993), the Songwriters Hall of Fame (June 2003), and the Irish Music Hall of Fame (September 1999); and a Brit Award (February 1994).

Known as "Van the Man" by his fans, Morrison first rose to prominence as the lead singer of the Northern Irish band Them, writing their 1964 hit "Gloria". A few years later, Morrison left the band for a successful solo career, starting with the album Astral Weeks.

Morrison has pursued an idiosyncratic musical path. Much of his music is tightly structured around the conventions of American soul and R&B, such as the popular singles "Brown Eyed Girl", "Moondance", "Domino", and "Wild Night". An equal part of his catalogue consists of lengthy, loosely connected, spiritually inspired musical journeys that show the influence of Celtic tradition, jazz, and stream-of-consciousness narrative, such as his classic album Astral Weeks and lesser known works such as Veedon Fleece and Common One. The two strains together are sometimes referred to as "Celtic Soul," and Morrison rejects the characterization of his genre of music as Rock, citing Elvis Presley as a non-influence.

He continues to perform regularly and achieved his highest U.S. chart position (number ten on the Billboard 200) with his 2008 album, Keep It Simple.

Van seems to make good use of the pentatonic scale , which is a very old form of music notation with 5 notes ( rather than the usual 7) used extensively in rhythm and blues and beloved by the improv jazz sax player.

Can anyone comment on which keys he prefers to perform in?

This song reminds me of the spring of 96 when I was driving a Belfast bloke who’d been my boss to a meeting. He was no longer my boss. I had somehow been given it on a bootleg. I was playing the tape in my car hoping he’d find me interesting circuitously via Van as though I’d friggin written the song. He liked the song but showed no interest in me. I’d had my heart slashed the previous year when I did work for him and I had told him about that at the time by a lovely guy after our summer of love of 95 when he went completely mad (he’d been doing that for 20 years before I met him) and when I’d take him to ireland to do a tour in the summer of 95 of Wicklow and Kerry and Galway and everywhere in between, at Dublin airport he’d lost the plot on arrival, got the attention of every security guy in the place, threatened to ‘blow up Ireland’ and eventually went missing for three days and only later did I find out he had ended up in St Brendan’s psychiatric hospital, slept on the streets and lost all the lovely things I’d bought for him (they were stolen when he was on the streets of Dublin) etc. Anyways, the Belfast bloke who’d been my boss had seemed like a good guy to me, even though am wary of Irish blokes, and I kinda hoped he might fancy me. I knew nothing of his private life. Anyways the song didn’t move him to move me. A short while later he told me he had a partner called A and it was his 38th birthday that summer and I got invited to their party in their new house where they had a new baby. I went to the party but had to drive as I lived in south london and he lived in north London and there was no other way to get there in less than a week unless I drove. So I couldn’t drink. Full of pretentious lefties and token Black people and we got summer pudding. I’d never heard of summer pudding before. It’s basically stale bread ffs and fruit. She was English and nice but wouldn’t show anyone the baby cos asleep throughout the noisy party I was told upstairs. I was though posted a fuckin photo of her and the baby sometime later. Which oddly I probably still have cos I’m not sure what to do with pictures of babies of weirdos. She spent the evening when he was out of earshot asking me if he was having affairs with everyone he worked with. She was particularly obsessed with a beautiful Black women he worked with. Who was also at the party. I just kept telling her I didn’t know anything which was true. When she wasn’t doing that, we were made to watch a video of her wedding to a man she’d married who was dying when she married him who had the same name as the guy I knew who she was now a parent with. Three months later he left her with a four month old baby. Then he tried to pay me money to put his name to a publication I’d written, so I said no. Then we fell out. Then the report was launched with much fanfare at a Council and much admired by a leading British psychiatrist who was there which he did not like and tried hard to get some collateral credit. By then I had moved from London to Glasgow. We met occasionally at conferences over the next few years and tolerated each other with small talk. I moved back to NI in 2008 and he must’ve moved back around the same time. I saw him on a bus one morning when I was going to work but pretended I hadn’t. As he did me. He didn’t give me a job I was overly qualified for some seven years later. I hear he’s now living in a mansion near Belfast Castle with a professor woman and of course, he’s also a professor cos all the c##ts I ever knew ended up being professors. Always wondered what happened the kid who was born in London in the summer of 96. Did she ever figure her dad and not her mum was the mad one.
