That's Life
Van Morrison Georgie Fame Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

That's life, that's what people say.
You're riding high in April,
Shot down in May.
But I know I'm gonna change their tune,
When I'm right back on top in June.

That's life, funny as it seems.
Some people get their kicks,
Steppin' on dreams
But I just can't let it get me down,
'Cause this big old world keeps spinnin' around.

I've been a puppet, a pauper, a pirate,
A poet, a pawn and a king.
I've been up and down and over and out
But I know one thing:
Each time I find myself flat on my face,
I pick myself up and get back in the race.

That's life, I can't deny it,
I thought of quitting,
But my heart just won't buy it.
'Cause if I didn't think it was worth a try,
I'd have to roll myself up in a big ball and die.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Van Morrison and Georgie Fame's song 'That's Life' touch upon the ups and downs of life and how they affect people's psyche. The opening lines, "That's life, that's what people say, you're riding high in April, shot down in May" speaks to the unpredictability of life, where one moment you could be soaring only to fall hard the next. However, the singer follows this up with a hopeful line, "But I know I'm gonna change their tune when I'm right back on top in June," displaying an unwavering determination to rise again.

The song carries on to add that despite the harsh realities of life, some people find solace in stepping on the dreams of others. The singer, however, refuses to be bogged down by this and proclaims, "But I just can't let it get me down, 'Cause this big old world keeps spinnin' around." The next part of the song summarizes the various roles the singer has played in life - a puppet, pauper, pirate, poet, pawn, and a king, all to convey the idea that life is a rollercoaster ride, full of great highs and terrible lows. However, the singer then states, "But I know one thing: each time I find myself flat on my face, I pick myself up and get back in the race."

Overall, the lyrics of 'That's Life' implore listeners to keep their heads up, to keep pushing even when life gets hard, and to never give up on themselves or their dreams, no matter how difficult life may seem.
