Van She formed when Nick Routledge [vocals, guitar], Matt Van Schie [bass], Michael Di Francesco [synths] and Tomek Archer [drums] all responded to an ad in Sydney’s Drum Media and arrived at an audition for a vocalist for a doom metal band with influences including Sepultura, Entombed, Black Skull and Phil Collins to find the whole thing was a sham. You could call it the result of Satan at work, or you could call it fate.
Since the chance meeting Van She have been playing out and about around Sydney, headlining their own shows and supporting the likes of The Presets and Wolf & Cub.
They’ve also been in the studio, the fruits of which we now see in the shape of a 6 track, self titled EP. Opener Mission acts as a gloomy but punchy entry point into the Van She world, while Kelly is like the epic, lovelorn cousin to The Presets’ Girl And The Sea. Sex City throbs and blips like a restless adolescent, and Survive is the greatest post post punk tune to make use of slap bass. Kelly Reprise blisses out for just a few seconds before Here With You brings us to a beautifully textured, melancholic close.
Calypso
Van She Lyrics

I feel there is people flying at your head
There's a list going on that will never be complete
So you're better off being dead
I feel the pain on your expression
I feel the rest coming out in your stride
I feel the heat coming down from the people above
I feel Calypso
I feel Calypso
When you walk out at five, you feel the break in your stride
You got the beat coming over your head
Music is the scene and now you know it keeps repeating
Let the beat come trippin' instead
I feel the pain on your expression
I feel the rest coming out in your stride
I feel the heat coming down from the people above
I feel there's nothing left to do but dance
I feel Calypso
I feel Calypso
I feel Calypso
I feel Calypso
I feel Calypso
I'll let go of this overture
I will be in love with you
Leave with me, this city forever
I never wanna let you down
I feel Calypso
I feel Calypso
I feel Calypso
I feel Calypso
The lyrics to Van She's song Calypso talk about the feeling of being surrounded by music and people. The song starts off with the singer feeling overwhelmed by the energy of a crowd of people in a club. He describes feeling like people are flying at his head and that there is a never-ending list of things to do, making him question if it's better to be dead. However, this dark tone immediately shifts to a positive one as the singer starts to feel the beat and dance to the music. The chorus repeats several times where he exclaims, "I feel Calypso," implying that the music and the beat are overwhelming him in a positive way.
The second verse continues with describing the feeling of leaving the club at the end of the night but still feeling the rhythm and beat of the music. The singer suggests that letting the music come "trippin' instead" will help them keep up with the beat. The chorus repeats, and then the song ends with a brief mention of being in love and never wanting to let anyone down.
Overall, the lyrics convey the feeling of being overwhelmed with both the positive and negative aspects of being in a crowd of people and listening to music. The singer suggests that letting go and allowing the music to take over can be a positive thing.
