Van She formed when Nick Routledge [vocals, guitar], Matt Van Schie [bass], Michael Di Francesco [synths] and Tomek Archer [drums] all responded to an ad in Sydney’s Drum Media and arrived at an audition for a vocalist for a doom metal band with influences including Sepultura, Entombed, Black Skull and Phil Collins to find the whole thing was a sham. You could call it the result of Satan at work, or you could call it fate.
Since the chance meeting Van She have been playing out and about around Sydney, headlining their own shows and supporting the likes of The Presets and Wolf & Cub.
They’ve also been in the studio, the fruits of which we now see in the shape of a 6 track, self titled EP. Opener Mission acts as a gloomy but punchy entry point into the Van She world, while Kelly is like the epic, lovelorn cousin to The Presets’ Girl And The Sea. Sex City throbs and blips like a restless adolescent, and Survive is the greatest post post punk tune to make use of slap bass. Kelly Reprise blisses out for just a few seconds before Here With You brings us to a beautifully textured, melancholic close.

Eating food, making love to the music of life
Hanging around with your friends at night
Friends you call your friends and people that you see through the night
Oh oh woah, walking around town
Thinking of all those things you made
Oh oh woah, no place we can go
Jamaica! The lights are off
You will be dancing strong, you know it!
Jamaica! The lights are off
You will be dancing strong, you know it!
And the second you know your part
Makes it easy for us to let go of all the people we depend on
Northern lights so we remember sun
Never came open until we left
Oh oh woah, walking around town
Thinking of all those things you made
Oh oh woah, no place we can go
To make it all disappear
Jamaica! The lights are off
You will be dancing strong, you know it!
Jamaica! The lights are off
You will be dancing strong, you know it!
[x2]
You know it!
Jamaica!
Jamaica! The lights are off
Jamaica! You will be dancing strong!
Van She's song "Jamaica" is all about embracing life and living in the moment. The lyrics speak about how we are all animals and how we should enjoy the simple things in life, like eating delicious food or making love, to the music of life. The song encourages us to spend time with our friends at night, creating memories and enjoying each other's company. The line "Friends you call your friends and people that you see through the night" speaks to the connections we make while out on the town, even with strangers.
The chorus of the song, "Jamaica! The lights are off, you will be dancing strong, you know it!" is a call to enjoy life to the fullest. Jamaica, in this context, represents a place of freedom and letting loose. The line "No place we can go to make it all disappear" speaks to the idea that we must embrace and enjoy every moment because we cannot escape the passing of time.
The lyrics are catchy and uplifting, encouraging listeners to dance and let loose. The melody itself is upbeat and cheerful, contributing to the song's overall positive energy. "Jamaica" is a song that reminds us to live in the present, enjoy every moment, and make the most of our time with friends and loved ones.

This video was shot at my house and they stayed with us while shooting the video. Good times had by all... Don't hate, they came to the side of jamaica you don't see in the tourist ads and stayed with, chilled and partied with the people from the community. And we were singing this sound for weeks after...
