Masks
Van der Graaf Generator Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(Hammill)

He's a man of the past and one of the present,
A man who hides behind a mask behind a mask;
A clown, a fool, believing it cool to be down
Or that the game is all about who laughs the last.

So he tells all his problems to his friends and relations,
Exposes his neuroses to their view.
They accept as fact every masochistic mumble of his act--
How could they know what was false and what was true?

Sometimes when he wakes
He feels he's walked into a dream
But all it takes
To remind him things are what they seem
Is the belief that the man behind the mask can really dance

Pirouetting smile
He sees himself cavorting,
Pierrot for a while
Before aborting
To find relief in the shelter of the dark, most telling mask.

After all the pantomimes are ended
He peels all the make-up off his face
To reveal, beneath, the tears running all down his cheeks:

Alone, he opens to the world...but it's much too late.
He's been left, in the end, without a face.

Overall Meaning

The song "Masks" by Van der Graaf Generator is an introspective analysis of the complexities of the human psyche, particularly one's tendency to hide behind a façade. The singer of the song is portrayed as a man who is both trapped in the past and burdened by the present. He wears a mask to conceal his true self from others and even himself. The mask is a metaphor for the different roles that we all play in life, often pretending to be someone we are not, in order to fit in or protect ourselves.

The first stanza of the song highlights the singer's persona as a clown or a fool, who derives pleasure from making others laugh. He thrives on being the center of attention and believes that winning the game of life means having the last laugh. The second stanza delves deeper into his psyche, revealing his tendency to open up to others about his problems, hoping for salvation. However, he finds solace in the acceptance of his neurotic behavior, amidst the false empathy of his listeners.

The third stanza takes a surreal turn, as the singer wakes up from a dream and realizes that what he sees is real. His belief in the man behind the mask, and his ability to dance, keeps him grounded. However, the final stanza reveals a darker truth. The singer, stripped of his masks, is left alone, vulnerable, and without a face. The mask that once protected him has now become a prison, and he is unable to find release even in the depths of darkness.

Masks (Maschere)

ogni masochistico borbottio della sua scena;
Piroettando sorride
si vede saltellare,
Pierrot per un po'
prima rifiutando
a trovare sollievo
a rivelare, sotto,

Edi Ademi

I remember when I discovered this song when I started listening to prog rock early when i was 14 I thought it was so fucking good (distorted guitar panned on the right, saxophone and organ doing crazy shit) now listening back to it grown up I see the song has alot more meaning that I can relate to.
Fantastic fucking song....

Fabio Copponi

Top song of VDGG, excellent piece, excellent voice....

Philippe Cirse

Gary Parkes

Fantastic track. Reminds me of lovely times.

Luigi Savarese

Un capolavoro in tutti i sensi

Alistair Drumbeat

Yet another sublime track from this outfit.
