Save The Best For Last
Vanessa Williams Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sometimes the snow comes down in June
Sometimes the sun goes 'round the moon
I see the passion in your eyes
Sometimes it's all a big surprise
'Cause there was a time when all I did was wish
You'd tell me this was love
It's not the way I hoped or how I planned
But somehow it's enough

And now we're standing face to face
Isn't this world a crazy place?
Just when I thought our chance had passed
You go and save the best for last

All of the nights you came to me
When some silly girl had set you free
You wondered how you'd make it through
I wondered what was wrong with you

'Cause how could you give your love to someone else
And share your dreams with me
Sometimes the very thing you're looking for
Is the one thing you can't see

But now we're standing face to face
Isn't this world a crazy place?
Just when I thought our chance had passed
You go and save the best for last

La-da-da-da-da-da-da

Sometimes the very thing you're looking for
Is the one thing you can't see

Sometimes the snow comes down in June
Sometimes the sun goes 'round the moon
Just when I thought our chance had passed
You go and save the best for last

You went and saved the best for last
Yeah, yeah

Overall Meaning

The song "Save The Best For Last" by Vanessa Williams is a bittersweet love song about a relationship that almost didn't happen, but ended up being worth the wait. The lyrics are poetic, capturing the idea that sometimes things don't go as planned and the best things in life come unexpectedly. The opening lines "Sometimes the snow comes down in June, sometimes the sun goes 'round the moon" suggest that life can be unpredictable, but the passion in the singer's eyes makes it all worth it. She realizes that the love she has now is not how she planned it, but somehow it's enough. The second verse addresses the doubts that the singer had when the man she loves was with someone else. She couldn't understand how he could give his love to someone else and share his dreams with her. However, in the end, they are standing face to face, and it all makes sense. The singer feels grateful that the man she loves saved the best for last by finally choosing her.

The chorus is a repeated phrase that sums up the song. The singer acknowledges that sometimes the very thing you're looking for is the one thing you can't see. And even though there were times when she thought their chance had passed, the man she loves saved the best for last. The song ends with a repetition of the chorus, with the singer singing "You went and saved the best for last" repeatedly.

Overall, "Save The Best For Last" is a poignant reminder that sometimes, life surprises us in the best ways possible. It's a song about gratitude, forgiveness, and the joy of finally finding the love that was meant for us.

Agreed. SHe's underrated in terms of "the most beautiful women in America". Don't think she's made it onto any list (not that I follow that stuff intentionally). She had that "beauty pagent level beauty". She was Miss America iirc...till she decided to do her Penthouse nude layout with some other chick. Calculated move. Which I think worked. Got her a needed jump start into her movie/singing career...cost her the Miss America crown...

Beautiful lips. Best shaped IMHO. Ideal. Some "beautiful women" might not have nice lips. I think that matters too..

Mixed race people are generally more attractive when they are. She is half black/white.

I think she was (and still is) better looking than a Sophie Vagara...who was at one time said to be "the most beautiful woman..." according to some standard. :P ?? It's make up. Ever see her w/o? YIKES!! Vanessa Williams doesn't need it. Even today. There are photos of her with next to no makeup on. Still beautiful.

As a singer...I'd say she's decent"...good voice here...but not at the same level as some of the "legends"....Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBell, Whitney Houston..Glennis Grace (Dutch)...

This is one of the greatest love songs ever made. Vanessa Williams is truly a star in every sense of the word. A truly poetic and touching song!

In the same category falls "Promise me" by Beverly Craven. A huge hit at a time though musically it was no longer into 80-ties. Arranged and usually performed in the style of "vocal nocturne" brings the emotional story of incoming separation starting with growing fear and anxiety but ending in acceptable consolation.
Ability to write open message and enclose it with appropriate music has long been lost.
