Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Vangelis' "Chariots of Fire" express a sense of excitement, wonder and exhilaration that comes with the sight of the titular chariots. The repetition of the phrase "chariots of fire" and the exclamation mark at the end of the song intensify this feeling of joy and amazement. It is almost as though the singer is in awe of these chariots and cannot contain their enthusiasm for them. There is a sense of urgency in the lyrics, as though the chariots are coming towards the singer and nothing can stop them.

The song itself has become an iconic piece of music, often used in Olympic ceremonies and associated with victory and achievement. The use of electronic instrumentation, sweeping synths and soaring melodies evoke a sense of grandeur and heroism. The title itself is taken from William Blake's poem "And did those feet in ancient time", which speaks of a vision of Jesus visiting England and the building of Jerusalem there. The allusion to this poem adds to the song's sense of grandeur and epicness, suggesting that the chariots of fire are something beyond the mundane and everyday.

Dear Vangelis,

I just want to let you know, whenever your soul may be ascending to, is similar to what you left to us in this world.
The burning tears that I had for my late father who passed away on January 12, 2020 is the very same as of May 17, 2022. I believe many also felt the same.
You spoke of love, courage, sympathy, greatness and hope like no one else could. When it was and will be difficult, you were the father; friend; light; closer to God and to nature itself for every single heart that listened to you.
And for that, I really do hope that heavens exist so we/I can thank you there.
All that is left is to carry the blissful smile in honor of your existence that happened once in a lifetime.

May your spirit of sound never rest and echo for eternities.
