My Name
Vanilla Ninja Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
What is left to say,
I used to know you off by heart.
Hanging out on this cold day,
The rain drives me out,
I haven't seen you here for five or so years.
Sitting next to me,
I'm trying to find the spark.
Chorus: Oh, come and say my name,
The way you used to all those years ago.
I know you,
There's a smile on my face,
Every time I memorise those days.
Come and say my name.
What have you been up to?
Still wear that ring?
The one I got you years ago.
I feel no remorse,
It's how it had to be,
We changed, too late, found someone who takes care of me,
Sitting next to me,
Is a hologram of us.
(Chorus)
Come and say my name.
Time has past,
What we had,
Bringing up pictures in my head.
Oh, come and say my name,
The way you used to all those years ago.
(Chorus)
The lyrics of Vanilla Ninja's song "My Name" speaks about two strangers who once knew each other by heart, but it has been five or so years since they last saw each other. They find themselves sitting next to each other on a cold day, and the rain drives them out, trying to find a spark between them. The chorus expresses the desire for the person to say the singer's name as they used to do all those years ago, and the singer remembers the days they spent together and how it brings a smile to their face. They ask if the person still wears the ring the singer got for them, but also acknowledge that they have both moved on and found someone who takes care of them. They sit next to each other, but it feels like a hologram of what they used to be.
The song exudes a sense of nostalgia and the idea that time has passed, and things have changed, is prevalent. The chorus, "come and say my name," is a plea for the person to acknowledge the past and bring some of it back to the present, even if it may only be for a moment. The song's emotion is conveyed through the lyrics' imagery, such as the rain and cold day, and the mention of a ring symbolizes the bond they once had. While it is evident that they have both moved on, the memory and desire to reignite their former connection are still present.
