Något dåligt och nytt har hänt
Men jag ser dig le
Med hans armar
På fel sätt över dig
När något dåligt nytt har hänt
Att du mår bra
Sa jag snällt men jag ljög såklart
För jag tänker på mig
Vad som krävs av mig
Att få ge kärlek till exempel
När något dåligt nytt har hänt
Okej
Här är min prognos
Ett surt, surt regn
Hela sommaren
Så du
Du ska vara beredd
På hårda skurar
Av jag och mig
När något dåligt nytt har hänt
(x3)
The lyrics to Vapnet's song Tjernobyl express a sense of unease and sadness during a time of change. The opening line, "Sommaren spränger sönder löv" (Summer bursts apart leaves), suggests a sudden and destructive change, possibly related to the nuclear disaster in Chernobyl. The following lines, "Något dåligt och nytt har hänt" (Something bad and new has happened), reinforce this idea and create a sense of uncertainty and fear.
However, despite this bleak atmosphere, the singer sees someone he cares about and notes, "Men jag ser dig le / Med hans armar / På fel sätt över dig" (But I see you smile / With his arms / In the wrong way around you). This suggests that the person he cares about is in a relationship with someone who may not treat them well, leading to conflicting emotions of happiness for the person's smile but sadness for their situation.
The second verse furthers this emotional conflict, as the singer lies and tells the person they care about that they are happy to hear they are doing well. However, the line "För jag tänker på mig / Vad som krävs av mig / Att få ge kärlek till exempel" (Because I think about me / What is required of me / To give love, for example) suggests that the singer is struggling with what it means to truly care for someone and give them love, especially when they may be in a difficult situation.
The repeated line, "När något dåligt nytt har hänt" (When something bad and new has happened), echoes throughout the song and serves as a reminder that even in the midst of uncertainty and fear, there can still be moments of connection and caring.
