A Whiter Shade Of Pale

We skipped the light fandango
Turned cartwheels 'cross the floor
I was felling kind of seasick
The crowd called out for more

The room was humming harder
As the ceiling flew away
When we called out for another drink
The waiter brought a tray

And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face at first just ghostly
Turned A Whiter Shade Of Pale

She said,"There 's no reason
And the truth is plain to see,"But I wandered through my playing cards
And would not let her be

Oneof sixteen vestal virgins
Who were leaving for the coast
And although my eyes were open
They might just as well been closed

And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face at first just ghostly
Turned A Whiter Shade Of Pale

And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her fare at first just ghostly
Turned A Whiter Shade Of Pale

And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale

That her face at first just ghostly
Turned A Whiter Shade Of Pale

Overall Meaning

"A Whiter Shade Of Pale" is a song by British rock band Procol Harum, written by Gary Brooker, Matthew Fisher and Keith Reid. The song is known for its cryptic and enigmatic lyrics, which have led to many different interpretations over the years.

The lyrics describe a scene of dancing and drinking at a party, where the singer and his partner are performing a light fandango and cartwheeling across the floor. However, the singer is feeling seasick and the crowd is requesting more entertainment. As the evening continues, the room becomes more intense and surreal, with the ceiling disappearing and the waiters bringing trays of drinks. Later, the singer meets a woman who tells him that there is no reason for her ghostly appearance, but he cannot shake her from his mind.

The second half of the song involves the singer recalling a story told by a miller, which causes the woman's face to turn a whiter shade of pale. The lyrics continue to describe the singer's experiences with the woman, and his inability to understand the reasons behind her actions.

Interpretations of the song range from religious allegory to drug-induced hallucinations to a commentary on the nature of love and relationships. Regardless of the meaning, "A Whiter Shade Of Pale" remains a beloved classic of psychedelic rock and one of the most recognizable songs of the 1960s.

- Jürgen Narjes - from Hungary (August 2023)
