The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.
Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.
Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Pröfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.
Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.
Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.

You know that I love you
I can't help myself
I love you and nobody else
In and out my life (In and out my life)
You come and you go (You come and you go)
Leaving just your picture behind (Ooh)
When you snap your finger or wink your eye
I come a-running to you
I'm tied to your apron strings
And there's nothing that I can do, ooh
I can't help myself
No, I can't help myself
'Cause sugar pie, honey bunch (Sugar pie, honey bunch)
I'm weaker than a man should be
I can't help myself
I'm a fool in love, you see
Wanna tell you I don't love you
Tell you that we're through and I try
But every time I see your face (Can't help myself)
I get all choked up inside
When I call your name
Girl, it starts to flame (Burning in my heart, tearing it all apart)
No matter how I try
My love I cannot hide
'Cause sugar pie, honey bunch (Sugar pie, honey bunch)
You know that I'm waiting for you (Waiting for you)
I can't help myself
I love you and nobody else, ooh
Sugar pie, honey bunch (Sugar pie, honey bunch)
I'd do anything you ask me to (Ask me to)
I can't help myself
I want you and nobody else, ooh
Sugar pie, honey bunch (Sugar pie, honey bunch)
You know that I love you (Love you)
I can't help myself
No, I can't help myself, ooh
The lyrics to "All By Myself" by Various Artists are about a person who is deeply in love with someone who constantly comes and goes from their life. The individual is unable to resist their love for this person and feels weak and foolish for being unable to control their feelings. The phrase "sugar pie, honey bunch" is used throughout the song as a term of endearment for the person they love and cannot help themselves around. Despite the pain this person causes them, they are unable to let go of their love for them.
The verse "When you snap your finger or wink your eye, I come a-running to you" emphasizes the power this person has over the individual, who is tied to their "apron strings." The chorus repeats the phrase "sugar pie, honey bunch" multiple times, highlighting the person's inability to resist their love. They admit that they "can't help themselves" and are "weaker than a man should be" because of their love for this person.
The bridge of the song expresses the individual's struggle to move on from their love interest. They want to tell them that they don't love them anymore and that they're through, but when they see their face, they can't help but feel choked up inside. The song ends with a declaration of love and the admission that the individual cannot help themselves when it comes to their feelings for this person.
