The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.
Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.
Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Pröfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.
Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.
Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.

Brava, brava, bravissima!
[Meg:]
Christine, Christine!
[Phantom:]
Christine...
[Meg:]
Where in the world have you been hiding?
Really you were perfect.
I only wish I knew your secret,
Who is this new tutor?
[Christine:]
Father once spoke of an angel,
I used to dream he'd appear,
Now as I sing I can sense him,
And I know he's here.
Here in this room he calls me softly,
Somewhere inside...hiding.
Somehow I know, he's always with me,
he's the unseen genius.
[Meg:]
Christine you must have been dreaming,
Stories like this can't come true
Christine you're talking in riddles,
And it's not like you!
[Christine:]
Angel of music,
Guide and Guardian,
Grant to me you glory!
[Meg:]
Who is this Angel?
This...
[Both:]
Angel of music,
Hide no longer,
secret and strange angel
[Christine:]
He's with me even now
[Meg:]
Your hands are cold
[Christine:]
All around me
[Meg:]
Your face, Christine, it's white
[Christine:]
It frightens me
[Meg:]
Don't be frightened
The song "Angel" from the 1986 Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical "The Phantom of the Opera" revolves around the character of Christine Daaé, who is visited by the mysterious "Angel of Music." The song begins with the Phantom, who is disguised as a tutor, congratulating Christine on her singing skills. Meg, Christine's friend, seeks to find out who the new tutor is, to which Christine responds by mentioning her father's tales of the Angel of Music. As Christine sings, she senses the presence of the Angel and feels guided by him. Meg tries to bring her back to reality by reminding her that stories like these can't come true, but Christine insists that she's not dreaming.
The song's lyrics are metaphorical and represent the conflict between Christine's desire for artistic perfection and her longing for love and guidance. The Angel of Music symbolizes both the inspiration and the danger of artistic ambition, while Christine's fear and vulnerability represent the emotional toll that comes with it. The song also highlights the Phantom's manipulative nature as he preys on Christine's innocence and vulnerability.
