The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.
Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.
Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Pröfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.
Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.
Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.
Black Night
Various Artists Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I don't feel so bright,
I don't care to sit tight.
Maybe I'll find on the way down the line
that I'm free, free to be me.
Black night is a long way from home.
I don't need a dark tree,
I can't feel, I can't see.
Maybe I'll find on the way down the line
that I'm free, free to be me.
Black night is a long way from home.
Black night, black night,
I don't need black night,
I can't see dark night.
Maybe I'll find on the way down the line
that I'm free, free to be me.
Black night is a long way from home.
The song "Black Night" by Various Artists seems to be a reflection of the artist's state of mind. From the first verse, we can gather that the artist is feeling out of sorts, maybe even depressed or anxious. The mention of the "black night" implies a sense of darkness and uncertainty, hence the feelings of being in a state of discomfort. The artist is not content with sitting still, maybe implying that they want to escape their current situation. They are looking for a way to feel free, to be themselves.
The second verse shows that the artist is looking for something, maybe some sense of clarity or direction. They don't need any more darkness or rough seas in their life, and they can't seem to connect with what is around them. The repeated lyrics of "Maybe I'll find on the way down the line/that I'm free, free to be me," show that the artist is hopeful but uncertain about what the future holds. The phrase "Black night is a long way from home" could refer to the artist feeling like they are far from a place where they feel happy or comfortable, both physically and mentally.
Overall, the song seems to be a contemplation of the emotions and uncertainties that come with life's hardships. It's an acknowledgment that things may be difficult right now, but there is hope that things will eventually get better, and the artist will be able to find their way back to feeling free and being themselves.
