The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.
Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.
Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Pröfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.
Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.
Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.

Zip your lips like a padlock
And meet me in the back
With the jack and the jukebox
I don't really care where you live at
Just turn around, boy, let me hit that
Don't be a little bitch with your chit chat
Music's up, listen hot stuff
I'm in love with this song
So just hush, baby, shut up
Heard enough
Stop, talk, talk, talking that blah, blah, blah
Think you'll be getting this? Nah, nah, nah
Not in the back of my car, ah, ah
If you keep talking that blah, blah, blah, blah, blah
Boy, come on, give me rock stuff
Come put a little love in my glove box
I wanna dance with no pants on
Meet me in the back with the jack and the jukebox
So cut to the chase kid
'Cause I know you don't care what my middle name is
I wanna be naked and you're wasted
Music's up, listen hot stuff
I'm in love with this song
So just hush, baby, shut up
Heard enough
Stop talk, talk, talking that blah, blah, blah
Think you'll be getting this? Nah, nah, nah
Not in the back of my car, ah, ah
If you keep talking that blah, blah, blah, blah, blah
You be delaying, you're always saying some shit
You say I'm playing, I'm never laying the dick
Saying blah, blah, blah 'cause I don't care who you are in this bar
It only matters who I am
Stop talk, talk, talking that blah, blah, blah
Think you'll be getting this? Nah, nah, nah
Not in the back of my car, ah, ah
If you keep talking that blah, blah, blah, blah, blah
Blah, blah, blah
Think you'll be getting this? Nah, nah, nah
Not in the back of my car, ah, ah
If you keep talking that blah, blah, blah, blah, blah
Blah, blah, blah
Stop talking
Stop talk, talk talking that
The lyrics of the song ‘Blah Blah Blah’ are about a woman who is not interested in hearing a man’s words or being interested in his personality, but only his physical attributes. She asks the man to stop talking about himself and instead take her to the back where there is a jukebox, insinuating that they should have sex. She does not care about where he lives or his personality, but only that he fulfills his physical desires. She also tells him to stop talking about empty words and instead put on some rock music so that they can indulge in their passion.
The lyrics of the song are quite provocative and can be interpreted in different ways. On one hand, it can be seen as a statement of female empowerment, where a woman is taking control of her desires and being vocal about them. On the other hand, it can be seen as objectification of men, where a woman is only interested in a man’s physical attributes and not his personality or feelings.
Overall, ‘Blah Blah Blah’ is a song that speaks to our culture’s obsession with physical attraction and hook-up culture. It is a catchy, fun and provocative pop song that can get people dancing and singing along.
