The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.
Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.
Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Pröfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.
Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.
Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.

Uuuuuuhh...
Hark how the bells
Sweet silver bells
All seem to say
Throw cares away
Christmas is here bringing good cheer To young and old
Meek and the bold
Can you hear the sound
Can you see the light through the door
Merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas
Merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas
On on they send
On without end
Their joyful tone to every home
Uh-uh, uh-uh, uh-uh, yeah
Ding dong dong ding ding dong dong ding
Uh-uh, uh-uh, uh-uh, yeah
Ding dong dong ding ding dong dong ding
Christmas is here
Oh how they pound
Raising the sound
O'er hill and dale
Telling their tale
Hear how they ring
While people sing
Songs of good cheer
Christmas is here
From every village town
Can you hear the sound
Can you see the light through the door
Merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas
Merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas
Hear how they ring
While people sing
Songs of good cheer
Christmas is here
Uh-uh, uh-uh, uh-uh, yeah
Ding dong dong ding ding dong dong ding
Uh-uh, uh-uh, ooh, yeah [Ding dong dong ding ding dong dong ding
Christmas is here
The lyrics to the classic song Carol of the Bells are full of festive cheer and merriment, as well as references to the traditions and excitement of Christmas. The opening line, "Hark how the bells, sweet silver bells", paints a picture of the bells ringing out across the landscape, calling people to gather together and celebrate the season. The phrase "throw cares away" suggests that Christmas is a time to forget one's worries and focus on enjoying the moment with loved ones.
The second verse emphasizes the universal appeal of Christmas, as it is "bringing good cheer to young and old, meek and the bold". The repetition of "Merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas" and the catchy melody of the chorus create a sense of joy and festivity that is hard to resist. The final verse once again highlights the way in which the sound of the bells brings people together to sing songs of good cheer and celebrate the magic of the season.
Overall, Carol of the Bells is a song that captures the essence of Christmas: the joy, the warmth, and the sense of togetherness that makes this time of year so special.
