Come Thou Fount
Various Artists Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Come, Thou Fount of every blessing
Tune my heart to sing Thy grace
Streams of mercy, never ceasing
Call for songs of loudest praise
Teach me some melodious sonnet
Sung by flaming tongues above
Praise the mount, I'm fixed upon it
Mount of Thy unchanging love
Here I raise my Ebenezer
Here there by Thy great help I've come
And I hope, by Thy good pleasure
Safely to arrive at home
Jesus sought me when a stranger
Wandering from the fold of God
He, to rescue me from danger
Interposed His precious blood
O to grace how great a debtor
Daily I'm constrained to be
Let that grace now, like a fetter
Bind my wandering heart to Thee
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it
Prone to leave the God I love
Here's my heart, O take and seal it
Seal it for Thy courts above
Come, Thou Fount of every blessing
Tune my heart to sing Thy grace
Streams of mercy, never ceasing
Call for songs of loudest praise
Teach me some melodious sonnet
Sung by flaming tongues above

Praise the mount, I'm fixed upon it
Mount of Thy unchanging love

Overall Meaning

The song "Come Thou Fount" is a hymn that expresses the singer's desire to praise and worship God. The first stanza acknowledges that God is the source of all blessings and asks Him to "tune" the singer's heart to respond with gratitude and worship. The second stanza emphasizes the mercy that God extends to His people, and the third stanza speaks of the singer's personal experience of being rescued by Jesus Christ. The fourth stanza expresses the singer's sense of indebtedness to God's grace, and the final stanza acknowledges the singer's tendency to wander away from God and asks Him to seal the singer's heart so that they may worship Him in eternity.

The lyrics of "Come Thou Fount" also contain some unique phrases and allusions to Scripture. The term "Ebenezer" in the second stanza refers to a stone that the prophet Samuel placed to commemorate God's help in the battle against the Philistines (1 Samuel 7:12). The phrase "flaming tongues above" in the third stanza alludes to the Holy Spirit's descent on the apostles at Pentecost (Acts 2:3). Additionally, the phrase "prone to wander" in the final stanza echoes the words of the psalmist in Psalm 119:176.

This song speaks deeply to my heart. Growing up, I saw friends fall away from Christ. I felt the same pull of sinful desires. So when the song says: “Prone to wander, Lord I feel it
Prone to leave the God I love
Here's my heart, oh take and seal it
Seal it for Thy courts above”

It’s a prayer for rescue, more than a song of praise. It’s a call of desperation saying, don’t let me leave you, God.

I’ve been walking with Christ for 37 years and still loving this God who repaired my broken family, saved me from suicide, gave me my own family and now helps me to teach the next generation.

If you don’t know the power and love of God, you need to give him a chance, my friend!

Oh, that day when freed from sinning

Clothed then in blood washed linen
How I'll sing Thy sovereign grace

Take my ransomed soul away
Send Thine angels now to carry
Me to realms of endless days

Hello Celtic Worshipers!!

My 16 month old daughter LOVES this song!! She's always so excited when I turn it on and comes running to dance and spin. Evelynn loves the flute, bagpipes, and violin.

One of the songs with the bagpipes solo made her cry because she was soo touched. I never knew bagpipes could be so moving. I've tried to play other videos with the pipes but she only likes how celtic worshipers play it!

I've been debating on writing a comment but we've probably listened to your songs over 2,000 times in the last few months. Please release more videos 💜

Blessings,
Your sister in Christ

My healthy 36 year old husband was killed by hospital protocol and left me with three little kids, 3, 7, and 11. Once I found this song, it has become my anthem. I listen to it daily, all the time. It keeps me going and gives me the reminder I need. The Holy Spirit is ALL OVER this song. 💖🙌💖

I was almost there with your husband when I had Covid and the hospital was doing its protocol with me.
I made it through, but had a stroke in the middle of the pandemic.
Props to you and your family as you continue to grieve ❤
