The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.
Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.
Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Pröfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.
Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.
Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.
Crossroads
Various Artists Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I went down to the crossroads, fell down on my knees.
Asked the Lord above for mercy, "Save me if you please."
I went down to the crossroads, tried to flag a ride.
I went down to the crossroads, tried to flag a ride.
Nobody seemed to know me, everybody passed me by.
I'm going down to Rosedale, take my rider by my side.
You can still barrelhouse, baby, on the riverside.
You can run, you can run, tell my friend-boy Willie Brown.
You can run, you can run, tell my friend-boy Willie Brown.
And I'm standing at the crossroads, believe I'm sinking down
The lyrics of "Crossroads" by Various Artists reflects the desperation and helplessness of the singer, who is seeking divine intervention to overcome a difficult situation. The repeated line, "I went down to the crossroads, fell down on my knees", conveys the depth of the singer's despair, as he prays for mercy from the Lord. He is seeking salvation and guidance from a higher power, hoping that his prayers will be answered and his troubles will be lifted.
The use of the crossroads as a symbol in the song is significant, as it is often associated with a point of decision or choice. The singer is faced with a dilemma and is unsure which path to take. He tries to flag a ride and seeks help from others but realizes that nobody knows him or wants to offer assistance in his time of need.
The line, "I'm going down to Rosedale, take my rider by my side", suggests that the singer is determined to keep moving forward and he is willing to take his fate into his own hands. Despite the challenging circumstances, he remains optimistic that he can still enjoy life's simple pleasures such as "barrelhouse" music by the riverside. However, the final line, "And I'm standing at the crossroads, believe I'm sinking down" reveals that while he may be trying to carry on, he is still struggling and feels as though he is sinking.
