Fish

Sat here by this stony brook until the grey day turned to dust
When up swam a fish with a children's book thought that I was lost.
He was on his way to the salmon hop, that's where they go to breed
Saw me sitting on this log and thought I'd like to read.

The night was cloudy but the moon he found a hole
Said that he felt bad for me cause I had no place to go
Why aren't you at the harvest ball with some sweet young gal
You just sit like a bump on the log and call that fish your pal.

Well, I told him I was an orphan lived here all alone
But many people have often tried to catch and take me home
They never caught me!

Thought that I was a hiding, call this log my home
But the fish and the moon and a sweet young gal
All want me for their own.

The night was cloudy but the moon he found a hole
Said that he felt bad for me cause I had no place to go

So I met that gal at the harvest ball, she took me to her room
While I slept in children's dreams, the fish ran away with the moon.

The fish ran away with the moon
The fish ran away with the moon

Overall Meaning

To Bob Dylan, this song could be about the idea of finding companionship in unexpected places. The singer of the song is sitting by a brook, feeling lost and alone, when a fish swims up to him with a children's book. This interaction may symbolize the idea of finding comfort in unexpected places, like a fish with a book, and not feeling so alone. The moon in the song also has a presence, adding to the idea of finding comfort in nature. The song ends with the fish running away with the moon, suggesting that despite finding moments of comfort in the natural world, the singer is ultimately left alone once again.

To Simon and Garfunkel, the song may represent the sense of longing and loneliness that can come with being isolated in nature. The singer is sitting by the stony brook alone, and although the fish with a book and the moon provide temporary relief, the singer ultimately finds himself alone once again. The line "Why aren't you at the harvest ball with some sweet young gal?” could be interpreted as societal pressure to conform and find companionship in a traditional way, yet the singer is unable to do so due to his isolated lifestyle.

To Neil Young, this song could be a commentary on the allure of nature and the desire to escape societal pressures. The singer finds comfort in the natural world, with the fish and moon providing moments of companionship. However, in the end, the fish and moon both leave, suggesting that ultimately nature cannot provide a lasting escape from societal pressures.

I lost my beloved wife of 31 years 3 years ago. She and I would listen together to your music from Marillion to Feast of Consequences and cry at the poignant beauty your words created! Now I cry alone. This is a intensely emotional song and one of simple beauty for me! How much I would give to have her here to enjoy this with me! Thank you, Fish, for an amazing journey in song through the years! My Lori and I love you and wish you well my friend!

All the courage for you, in this arsh moment! Fish still the one who knows how to read and sing a soul, since Marillion till this days!

Sorry for Your loss and wishing You many many moments of meeting (do I say "encountering"!??) Your wife in situations where You know and feel she is still there in other than the usual ways. My vocabulary isn't enough to express what I was going to say.

This song is so on point. It's not only a song, it's introspection and extrospection in balance, it's a sharing of loss and a sharing of vulnerability, regret and nostalgia for all that was and is no more. It's what many of us experience, at different levels, but we're too afraid to face. I can't thank Fish enough for the life insights that he has shared over the years...I am 53 years old now but have been following him since I was 18 years old. He has never disappointed, and never will. More than a musician, I think he is one of the most influential poets of our times.

@Mr.Batsu12

A friend introduced me to Marillion's music when I was 16. It was the Fugazi album and I soon bought Script, Misplaced Childhood and then Clutching At Straws to my collection and played them endlessly. I'm 53 years old now and I still love those early (Fish era) Marillion albums as well as the solo Fish albums. Thank you so much for a lifetime of amazing music sir.
