The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.
Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.
Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Prรถfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.
Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.
Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.

With the roses so red and the lilies so fair
And the mirtles so bright with the emerald dew
The pale and the leader and eyes look like blue
I will dance I will sing and my laugh shall be gay
I will charm every heart in each crown I will sway
When I woke from my dreaming my idols were clay
Oh he taught me to love him and promised to love
And to cherish me over all others above
How my heart is now wondering no misery can tell
He's left me no warning no words of farewell
Oh he taught me to love him and call me his flower
That was blooming to cheer him through life's dreary hour
How I long to see him and regret the dark hour
He's gone and neglected his pale wildwood flower
The lyrics to the traditional folk song "Wildwood Flower" are steeped in emotion and longing for a lost love. The first verse sets the scene with the singer describing her physical appearance and the beauty of nature around her, juxtaposing it with the sadness in her heart. She then transitions into a promise to dance and sing, to be charming and captivating to all those around her, despite the pain she feels.
In the second verse, the singer recounts how her lover had taught her to love him, to cherish and adore him above all else. But he has left her without any warning or farewell, causing her heart to wonder in misery. She repeats the line about him teaching her to love him, but adds the detail that he called her his flower, blooming to cheer him through life's dreary hours. She longs to see him again but regrets the moment he left her alone and neglected.
The lyrics to "Wildwood Flower" have been recorded by numerous artists in various styles including folk, country, bluegrass, and Americana. The song has endured over time due to its poignant and relatable themes of love and loss. It has also become a folk standard, with countless covers and adaptations.

We were good, we were gold
Kind of dream that can't be sold
We were right 'til we weren't
Built a home and watched it burn
Mm, I didn't wanna leave you, I didn't wanna lie
Started to cry, but then remembered I
I can buy myself flowers
Write my name in the sand
Talk to myself for hours
Say things you don't understand
I can take myself dancing
And I can hold my own hand
Yeah, I can love me better than you can
Can love me better, I can love me better, baby
Can love me better, I can love me better, baby
Paint my nails, cherry red
Match the roses that you left
No remorse, no regret
I forgive every word you said
Ooh, I didn't wanna leave you, baby, I didn't wanna fight
Started to cry, but then remembered I
I can buy myself flowers
Write my name in the sand
Talk to myself for hours, yeah
Say things you don't understand
I can take myself dancing, yeah
I can hold my own hand
Yeah, I can love me better than you can
Can love me better, I can love me better, baby
Can love me better, I can love me better, baby
Can love me better, I can love me better, baby
Can love me better, I (uh-huh, I)
I didn't wanna leave you, I didn't wanna fight
Started to cry, but then remembered I
I can buy myself flowers, uh-huh
Write my name in the sand
Talk to myself for hours, yeah
Say things you don't understand (it better than you)
I can take myself dancing, yeah
I can hold my own hand
Yeah, I can love me better than
Yeah, I can love me better than you can
Can love me better, I can love me better, baby (huh-uh)
Can love me better, I can love me better, baby (than you can)
Can love me better, I can love me better, baby
Can love me better, I
