The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.
Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.
Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Pröfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.
Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.
Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.

If there's somethin' strange in your neighborhood
Who you gonna call?
(ghostbusters)
If it's somethin' weird and it don't look good
Who you gonna call?
I ain't afraid of no ghost
I ain't afraid of no ghost
If you're seein' things runnin' through your head
Who can you call?
(ghostbusters)
An invisible man sleepin' in your bed
Oh who you gonna call?
(ghostbusters)
I ain't afraid of no ghost
I ain't afraid of no ghost
Who you gonna call?
(ghostbusters)
If you're all alone pick up the phone and call
(ghostbusters)
I ain't afraid of no ghost
Mmm I hear it likes the girls
I ain't afraid of no ghost
Yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah
Who you gonna call?
(ghostbusters)
Mmm if you've had a dose of a freaky ghost baby
You better call
(ghostbusters)
Ow
Let me tell you something bustin' makes me feel good
I ain't afraid of no ghost
I ain't afraid of no ghost
Don't get caught alone oh no
(ghostbusters)
When he comes through your door unless you just a want some more
I think you better call
(ghostbusters)
Oh who you gonna call?
(ghostbusters)
Who you gonna call?
(ghostbusters)
Ah think you better call
(ghostbusters)
Ha-ha
Who you gonna call?
(ghostbusters) I can't hear you
Who you gonna call?
(ghostbusters)
Louder
(ghostbusters)
Who you gonna call?
(ghostbusters)
Who can you call?
(ghostbusters)
Who you gonna call?
(ghostbusters)
The timeless classic Ghostbusters, performed by Various Artists, is a theme song for the 1984 blockbuster movie of the same name, released by Columbia Pictures. The song echoes the basic premise of the movie, which revolves around a group of three parapsychologists who are initially university professors and have to save New York City from supernatural occurrences. The lyrics are a clear message to the listeners, presenting themselves as a solution to the problem of ghosts in the verses of the song.
The chorus starts with the famous lines, ''Who you gonna call? Ghostbusters!'' giving an affirmative response to the question posed in the previous verse. The artist proclaims that they are not afraid of ghosts, regardless of how spooky and mysterious the situation is. The remaining verses continue to talk about different supernatural experiences and encourage the listener to call the Ghostbusters for help. A catchy melody and its memorable musical arrangement make Ghostbusters a fan-favorite, a timeless classic that has lasted for decades within pop culture.
