Hallelujah

John Cale

letratradução

I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
It goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing hallelujah

Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you to a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the hallelujah

Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Maybe I have been here before
I know this room, I've walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew you
I've seen your flag on the marble arch
Love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah

Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

There was a time you let me know
What's real and going on below
But now you never show it to me, do you?
And remember when I moved in you
And the holy dark was moving too
And every breath we drew was hallelujah

Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Maybe there's a God above
And all I ever learned from love
Was how to shoot at someone who outdrew you
And it's not a cry you can hear at night
It's not somebody who's seen the light
It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah

Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" have been interpreted in many ways since the song's release in 1984. John Cale's version of the song, which is arguably the most popular cover, features hauntingly beautiful piano melodies and a somber vocal performance. The first verse of the song speaks of a "secret chord" that David played to please the Lord. This chord is the combination of the fourth and the fifth, which are the two most important notes in Western music. The minor fall, which is the third note, and the major lift, which is the seventh note, further enhance the emotional impact of the progression. The use of these musical elements symbolizes the complex and powerful nature of spirituality.

The second verse tells a story of love and betrayal, with a woman breaking a man's heart in the most painful way. The "kitchen chair" and "cut hair" metaphorically symbolize the emasculation of the man, who is deeply wounded by the loss of his love. From his lips, however, comes the word "hallelujah," which is a powerful, yet barren expression of praise. This symbolizes how the highest form of spiritual expression cannot exist without pain and suffering.

The last verse takes a philosophical turn, questioning the existence of God and the meaning behind love. The line "And all I ever learned from love was how to shoot at someone who outdrew you" speaks of the inherent violence and competitiveness that love often inspires. The "cold and broken hallelujah" is a final expression of the disillusionment and disappointment that the singer feels toward both God and love.

I cannot believe I found this!!! Late 80s or early 90s I think I owned this cassette tape. Possibly CD form. Listened to all the movements over and over but THIS ONE.
I must have listened to this movement 200 times (not even joking!)
God bless you all for your contribution to musical history!
Coming from a chorus person- most memorable moments of this one (not even talking about these AMAZING CHORUS VOICES!!! Anyone who has been in a chorus realizes the ENORMITY of these voices)
1) The breakdown with male voices -‘THE KINGDOM OF HIS WORD... just gorgeous.
2) everyone who is singing is energetic and singling their parts... so great to see!
3) and then - you have these gorgeous dynamics of the King is kings and lord of lords going from p to fff and back down and back up again.

Seriously guys- if anyone that sang this 20 years ago- YOU INSPIRED ME SO MUCH with my walk with the Lord.

20 + years later. What a treat!!!

I have searched and searched for this version of the Hallelujah Chorus for more years than I care to remember. To me, it is hands down the best performance of Handel's composition I can ever hope to hear. Thank you who ever found it and uploaded it. Merry Christmas.
