Happy Xmas (War Is Over)
[John/Yoko/The Plastic Ono Band/The Harlem Community Choir]

(Happy Xmas Kyoko
Happy Xmas Julian)

So this is Xmas
And what have you done
Another year over
And a new one just begun
And so this is Xmas
I hope you have fun
The near and the dear one
The old and the young

A very Merry Xmas
And a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear

And so this is Xmas (war is over)
For weak and for strong (if you want it)
For rich and the poor ones (war is over)
The world is so wrong (if you want it)
And so happy Xmas (war is over)
For black and for white (if you want it)
For yellow and red ones (war is over)
Let's stop all the fight (now)

A very Merry Xmas
And a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear

And so this is Xmas (war is over)
And what have we done (if you want it)
Another year over (war is over)
A new one just begun (if you want it)
And so happy Xmas (war is over)
We hope you have fun (if you want it)
The near and the dear one (war is over)
The old and the young (now)

A very Merry Xmas
And a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear

War is over, if you want it
War is over now

Overall Meaning

The song "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" is a holiday song that was first released in 1971 by the music duo John Lennon and Yoko Ono, along with the Plastic Ono Band and the Harlem Community Choir. The song is a call for peace and an end to war during the holiday season, and it features a variety of voices singing in unison. The lyrics of the song are straightforward, with Lennon and Ono encouraging listeners to enjoy the holiday season while also reflecting on the state of the world and the need for peace.

The song begins by acknowledging the fact that another year has come and gone, and that a new one has just begun. In the chorus, Lennon and Ono wish listeners a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, and they express the hope that the coming year will be a good one. However, the song also acknowledges the fact that there is much wrong with the world, particularly with regard to war and conflict. The chorus includes the repeated phrase "war is over, if you want it," which serves to emphasize the idea that peace is possible if people are willing to work towards it.

The verses of the song are similarly focused on the need for peace and an end to war. In particular, the song emphasizes the idea that peace is something that should be desired and worked towards by people of all backgrounds and identities. The lines "for black and for white" and "for yellow and red ones" serve to remind listeners that peace is a universal goal that should be pursued by people of all races and nationalities. Overall, "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" is a simple yet powerful call for peace that continues to resonate with listeners today.

Lots of amazing artists have covered this Lennon classic, and while it's hard to pick a fav...this ones definitely up there. I also have mad respect for Celine being the only artist who kept the original line of: 'the war is so long'. EVERY other person who's covered it either recites 'the road is so long' or the more commonly used 'the world is so wrong'.
