The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.
Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.
Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Pröfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.
Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.
Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.

My one companion
You were all
That mattered
You were once
A friend and father
Then my world
Was shattered
Wishing you were
Somehow here again
Wishing you were
Somehow near
Sometimes it seemed
If I just dreamed,
Somehow you would
Be here
Wishing I could
Hear your voice again
Knowing that I
Never would
Dreaming of you
Won't help me to do
All that you dreamed
I could
Passing bells
And sculpted angels,
Cold and monumental,
Seem, for you,
The wrong companions
You were warm and gentle
Too many years
Fighting back tears
Why can't the past
Just die?
Wishing you were
Somehow here again
Knowing we must
Say goodbye
Try to forgive
Teach me to live
Give me the strength
To try
No more memories,
No more silent tears
No more gazing across
The wasted years
Help me say
Goodbye.
The lyrics of "Here Comes Santa Claus" describe the excitement and anticipation surrounding the arrival of Santa Claus on Christmas Eve. The repetition of the line "Here comes Santa Claus, right down Santa Claus lane" creates a sense of urgency and joy, as listeners imagine the sound of his sleigh bells and the sight of his reindeer pulling him along. The mention of Vixen and Blitzen, two of the most well-known reindeer, adds to the sense of magic and wonder surrounding the holiday.
The second verse describes Santa's bag of toys, which he will deliver to boys and girls all around the world. The lyrics encourage listeners to "jump in bed and cover your head," as they eagerly await his arrival. The line "he doesn't care if you're rich or poor, he loves you just the same" reinforces the idea that Christmas is a time of joy and generosity, regardless of one's personal circumstances.
The third verse reflects a more serious tone, as it suggests that Santa Claus understands the power of love and compassion. The lyrics contend that "Santa Claus knows we're all Gods children," and this realization allows people to fill their hearts with Christmas cheer. The final verse emphasizes the importance of following the light of the Christmas star, as it will lead to peace on earth and goodwill towards all.
