The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.
Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.
Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Pröfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.
Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.
Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.

You drew a picture of my morning
But you couldnt make my day, hey!
Im rockin and youre yawning
But you never look my way, hey!
Im lickin down you darlin
In every single way, hey!
Your funny flow is foreign
[treach:]
This aint got shit to do wit shampoo
But watch our head n shoulders brother older bold enough to fold ya
Yo I told ya a raid afraid of what I made
Plus played a funky fit so save ya flips
Plus tricks for that music plus the monkey bit.
[vinnie:]
Triggas from the grilltown illtown
Some ask how it feels
How the deal is that were real so were still around
Dont lamp wit a freestyle phantom aint tryin to be handsome
Shrinkin what ya thinkin cause Im vampin
[chorus:]
I live and die for hip hop
This is hip hop for today
I give props to hip hop so hip hop hooray...

Not cause I hate cha!
You put your heart in a part of a part that spreads apart
Even though I forgave ya when you had a spark.
You try to act like something really big is missing
Even though my names graffiti written on your kitten
I love black women always and disrespect aint the way
Lets start a family today hip hop hooray...ho...hey!

Cause I aint bailing no hey aint choppin no crops
But still grownin ever day!
[vinnie:]
Heres a thunder sound from the wonders found
From the underground town down the hill
Feel how illtown drown smiles to frowns
Snatchin crowns from clowns beat downs are found
Dont know me dont come around.
Tippy tippy (pause)
Tippy tippy (pause)
Sometimes creepin up I eat em up
Your style is older than lou rawls!
Peace to this one and that one and them
That way I shout out and I didnt miss one friend
Fools get foolish neither them or parker lewis knew us
You could have crews wit shoes and cant step to us
Some kitty purr I call em sir too
Any trick that diss gets a curfew
I put my projects for boots step through troops and leave proof
My problem solvers name is mook!

Smooth it out now!
The lyrics of "Hip Hop Hooray" by Naughty By Nature is a classic rap track that celebrates the genre of hip hop music. Vinnie starts off the first verse by talking about his self-confidence in comparison to his romantic interest's lack of interest. He raps about being proud of himself and his abilities, even though his partner may not appreciate him. Treach jumps in and raps about his capabilities as a rapper and his experience in the music industry by boasting praises for his skills. He then talks about the difficulties that come with being a popular figure while slyly hinting at the infidelity rumors that come along with fame.
The chorus line of "I live and die for hip hop" represents the obsession and dedication that rap artists have for their craft. Vinnie, Treach, and their contemporaries name-check other rappers and hip hop groups in the third verse as a sign of respect and admiration for their craft. Finally, the phrase "Smooth it out now!" is an iconic call-and-response with the listener, letting them know that the track is about to end.
