The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.
Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.
Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Pröfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.
Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.
Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.
I'll Be There

Love's last episode
There's nowhere to go, no no
You made your choice
And now it's up to me
To bow out gracefully
Though you hold the key, but baby
Whenever you want me, I'll be there
Whenever you need me, I'll be there
I'll be around
I knew just what to say
And now I found out today
All the words had slipped away, well I know
There's always a chance
A tiny spark will remain, yeah
And sparks turn into flames
And love can burn once again, well I know you know
Whenever you call me, I'll be there
Whenever you want me, I'll be there
Whenever you need me, I'll be there
I'll be around, yeah
Whenever you call me, I'll be there
Whenever you want me, I'll be there
Even if I have to crawl, I'll be there
I'll be around
Just call me on the phone, I'll be there
I'll never leave you alone, I'll be there
Just call out my name, I know I know you know
I'll be around
I'll be skipping and a jumping, I'll be there
I'll be ripping and running, I'll be there
Just call out my name I know you know
I'll be around
The lyrics of "One By One" describe an ending relationship. The first verse talks about the "fork in the road" and "Love's last episode," implying that the singer and their partner have reached a point of no return in their relationship. The second line, "There's nowhere to go, no no," shows that the singer recognizes the finality of the situation. The third and fourth lines reveal that the partner has already made their choice to end the relationship, and now it's the singer's turn to accept it and "bow out gracefully."
The chorus of the song provides a possible glimmer of hope. The singer says that they will always be there for their former partner, no matter when or why. They claim that they will be "around," which suggests a willingness to remain in each other's lives, even if from a distance. The second verse introduces a twist in the story, as the singer realizes that the words they once had at their disposal to persuade their partner to stay in the relationship have "slipped away." However, they acknowledge that a "tiny spark" might still exist between them, and it only takes that spark to turn into a "flame" and reignite their love.
Overall, "One By One" is a song about the difficulty of accepting the end of a relationship but remaining hopeful that love can emerge again someday.
