The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.
Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.
Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten PrΓΆfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.
Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.
Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.
I'm On Fire
Various Artists Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Did he go and leave you all alone
I got a bad desire
Oh-oh-oh, I'm on fire
Tell me now baby is he good to you
Can he do to you the things I don't do
I can take you higher
Sometimes it's like someone took a knife baby
Edgy and dull and cut a six-inch valley
Through the middle of my soul
At night I wake up with the sheets soaking wet
And a freight train running through the
Middle of my head
Only you can cool my desire
Oh-oh-oh, I'm on fire
The lyrics of βIβm on Fireβ by Various Artists conveys a strong desire that the singer has for a little girl. The song is told from the perspective of someone who is questioning whether the girlβs father is home or if she is alone. The desire the singer is feeling for the girl is described as being bad, but itβs obvious that the singer canβt help how they feel. The song is full of sexual tension that is conveyed through the lyrics, which makes the meaning of the song somewhat controversial.
The song suggests that this desire is uncontrollable, and the absence of the girlβs father plays a role in the singerβs confidence to approach her. The lyrics contain lines that are written in a bluesy, gritty way which makes it feel like a fleeting feeling of lust. The singer continues to ask the girl if her current lover is good to her or if he can do the things the singer doesnβt do. The language used in the song depicts the singerβs longing to be with the girl by saying, βI can take you higherβ.
The chorus of the song is where the title comes from, and it repeats that the singer has a bad desire and that he is on fire. The lyrics then suggest that itβs difficult to manage these feelings and compares it to a sharp knife that has cut through the middle of the singerβs soul. The song ends with the singer feeling restless and unable to sleep at night, with only the girl being able to cool his overwhelming desire.
