It's the perfect time of year
Somewhere far away from here
I feel fine enough, I guess
Considering everything's a mess
There's a restaurant down the street
Where hungry people like to eat
I could walk but I'll just drive
It's colder than it looks outside

It's like a dream you try to remember
But it's gone
Then you try to scream
But it only comes out as a yawn
When you try to see the world
Beyond your front door
Take your time, 'cause the way I rhyme's gonna make you smile
When you realize that a guy my size might take a while
Just to try to figure out what all this is for

It's the perfect time of day
To throw all your cares away
Put the sprinkler on the lawn
And run through with my gym shorts on
Take a drink right from the hose
And change into some drier clothes
Climb the stairs up to my room
Sleep away the afternoon

Like a dream you try to remember
But it's gone
Then you try to scream
But it only comes out as a yawn
When you try to see the world
Beyond your front door
Take your time 'cause the way I rhyme's gonna make you smile
When you realize that a guy my size might take a while
Just to try to figure out what all this is for

Pinch me, pinch me, cause I'm still asleep
Please God tell me that I'm still asleep

On an evening such as this
It's hard to tell if I exist
If I pack the car and leave this town
You'll notice that I'm not around
I could hide out under there
I just made you say "underwear"
I could leave but I'll just stay
All my stuff's here anyway

Like a dream you try to remember
But it's gone
Then you try to scream
But it only comes out as a yawn
When you try to see the world
Beyond your front door
Take your time 'cause the way I rhyme's gonna make you smile
When you realize that a guy my size might take a while
Just to try to figure out what all this is for

Pinch me
Try to figure out what all this is for
Pinch me
Try to see the world beyond your front door

Pinch me
Try to figure out what all this is for

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Pinch Me" by Barenaked Ladies depict the feeling of being content with the present moment despite the mess in the world. The singer acknowledges that everything is chaotic, but at a certain time of year, somewhere far away from the mess, he feels fine enough. The restaurant down the street represents the world outside his own, but he decides to drive instead of walking due to the cold weather. The song encourages listeners to take their time to appreciate life's simple joys, such as running through a sprinkler or sleeping away an afternoon.

The lyrics also mention the idea of trying to remember a dream and how it can quickly disappear. The singer likens it to screaming but only yawning comes out. He encourages listeners to take their time because he himself, as a larger man, might take a while to figure out what life is for.

Different interpretations can be made of the song from an artist's perspective. An acoustic version with slower pacing could add melancholy to the lyrics' theme, highlighting the contrast between the singer's contentment and the chaos outside. An upbeat rock version, on the other hand, could emphasize the song's message of enjoying life's simple pleasures amidst the madness.

I remember these beautiful songs. Now we have no romantic songs like we had way back then, that we could slow dance to. A lot of the rap music today is full of vulgar words and obscene descriptions of juvenile love. Another thing is, there's no end to the songs today, it just stops without a final normal ending. There's no funny songs anymore either.

Asdrúbal Cuauro

Beautiful melodies that trascend time because they synthesize what we call romanticism overshadowed by the shrill lights of shooting star. Thanks for sharing.
