The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.
Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.
Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Pröfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.
Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.
Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.

We tore the roof off this mutha, now it's time to blow.
Like we don't need no water, don't bother, we let it burn.
We keep the fire just a little bit hotter, that way you'll learn.
Respect I earn! Started with the clique that i hanged.
Respect I earn! Ever since i got in this game.
Respect I earn! Never wanted fortune or fame.
I'd rather have these South D'ego Streets knowin my name.

We lyrical murderin like we criminals.
It's life or death, medical decision.
We so dope out the lab that you'll need a prescription.

Lights Out
These lyrics can be interpreted by multiple artists in different ways, depending on their musical style and message they want to convey. For a rapper or hip-hop artist, they may emphasize the power and impact of their music by referencing their ability to "tear the roof off" through their lyrics and the intensity of their beats. They may also relate to the struggle of earning respect and recognition in their field while staying true to their roots and community. The line "It's life or death, medical decision" could be a commentary on the intense competition in the music industry and the pressure to constantly produce new and innovative work.
For a rock artist, the emphasis may be on the subversive nature of their music and the raw energy they bring to the stage. The lines "We keep the fire just a little bit hotter, that way you'll learn" and "We so dope out the lab that you'll need a prescription" could be interpreted as a way of asserting their dominance over the status quo and pushing boundaries in their genre. The chorus of "Lights Out, Game Over" could be a nod to the intensity of their live shows and their ability to capture a crowd's attention and leave them in awe.

Lyric
Lights out! Lights out!
We don't wanna see how we're going crazy
Lights out! Lights out!
Oh we wanted it to be a surprise
But tonight something's different as I see her come alive
And I don't know how and I don't know why
It's just something in her eyes
And there's no turning back
No turning back
I can't say how I just know
There's no turning back
Or second chance
We'll stay until our song's over
When the light's go out
There's just one sound
Which makes it through the noise
Which makes up my choice
So while we're hung my string
I know I'd do anything for you
Lights out! Lights out!
We don't wanna see how we're going crazy
Lights out! Lights out!
Oh we wanted it to be a surprise
And I feel that I'm slipping as the world becomes a blur
And I don't know how and I don't know why
But I've lost myself in her
And there's no turning back
No second chance
All I see is this
Nothing else exists
Just you
And if the skies did fall apart I wouldn't know at all
Coz all I see is this
I guess I realised it myself
Only that doesn't mean a thing
Oh there's only one clear sound
When the lights go out
There's no turning back!
All I see is this
Nothing else exists
Just you
So while we're hung my string
I know I'd do anything for you
