The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.
Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.
Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Pröfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.
Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.
Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.
Love Shack
Various Artists Lyrics

And I liked it better then
Back when I thought you were mine
Sang all your songs for me
I liked this song when you were mine
And I liked it better then
The people here, they don't know that
Tonight I'm one of them
Here's to you, your voice on the jukebox
Here's to you, I'm dancin' at the love shack
Shakin' it down at the love shack
Shakin' at the fool shack
Now the whole damn country loves you
Your voice belongs to them
They bought it for a quarter
And they sing along for a beer
So just one more boys, whaddya say?
One more if you please
And I might find a reason why
You don't belong to me
Here's to you, your voice on the jukebox
Here's to you, I'm dancin' at the love shack
Shakin' it down at the love shack
Shakin' at the fool shack
You can sing your song, boy
'Cause you sing it good
But raise your glass to me
While you're out on the road
'Cause tonight I paid my quarter
And that still makes you mine
Once you told me that
But now I'm shakin' at the love shack
Here's to you, your voice on the jukebox
Here's to you, I'm dancin' at the love shack
Shakin' it down at the love shack
Shakin' at the fool shack
The above lyrics are taken from Various Artists' song "Love Shack." The song is told from the perspective of a person who used to be in a relationship with the lead singer and who was present when the song "Love Shack" was originally written. The singer reminisces about the past and how much they enjoyed the song when it was just for them. However, now that the song has become popular and is played on jukeboxes across the country, the singer feels a bit left out and disconnected - everyone is singing along to a song that used to be theirs alone.
The singer raises a glass to the lead singer and his success but still feels a sense of ownership over him - even just through the few quarters they've spent to hear his song. The lyrics convey the idea of lost connections and faded memories, of a past relationship that has been replaced by a song that now belongs to everyone. However, despite this sense of nostalgia, the singer is still able to dance along and enjoy the music.
