The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.

Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.

Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Pröfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.

Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.

Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.

One of the earliest Big-band era songs I heard as a kid in the '70's on "Your Hit Parade" with Bea and her husband André Baruch. AM radio on Sunday mornings. I thought it was beautiful and still think it is. Interestingly, I never came across a copy for my 78RPM collection. I only recently got one online.

This magnificent side is one of my favorites from the underrated Clinton band. A huge hit in its day, this one seems not to be as well-known to younger swing fans as it should be. The reed and muted trumpet supported by high hat introduction and reed and muted brass first chorus, moving in and out of shuffle rhythm, are lovely. Bea's vocal, perhaps the finest among her many great ones, is magnificent. Her "whirlpool," "begin to be" and final "reverie" are exquisite -- this is how to sing a love song. The not-to-be-missed best pop version of this Debussy immortal.

During the 1930s this was a very popular dance band. Bea Wain imho really made this band popular. I "discovered" Mr. Clinton's highly rated band for the time on XM40's. I think she has a lovely voice. As to Larry Clinton, his band was broken up by WW2 and as a HIGHLY RATED Army-Air Corp officer was out winning the second world war. Believe he was a bomber pilot and not a REMF, if any of you had the sand to serve in Vietnam you would know what REMF means. Larry Clinton passed at 75 years old in Arizona

The "Andre & Bea" show, which was a re-creation of "Your Hit Parade" but using the original recordings, which I heard between about 1983 and 1996 on radio, has a good explanation of the development of this song - which includes getting permission from the Claude Debussy family abroad - on one of its hourlong presentations.
