The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.

Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.

Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Pröfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.

Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.

Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.

Overall Meaning

What happens now?

I've known of No Wave for a long time and as an avid music listener I knew that someday I would be able to digest these songs in an exciting way, but i was skeptical. Never embracing it, but just keeping it at bay.

It came to me by reading an article about DNA in a review about Liquid Liquid, yup not even intentional. I knew of DNA for years but, again, No Wave was too much. Well now its not. And its the most exciting thing.

That's the thing, right!? Food, Beer, Art, etc. It takes a bit for it to be acquired sometimes.

Well, I'm a bit drunk but for the first time all these songs sound like my new favorite singles. Nothing else, just wanted to share this moment. But now what?

You should check out the band "Saccharine Trust" if you like this stuff (if you haven't already). They are a very manic intense wiry sounding punk band that have a slight (very slight) more ear for chorus hooks.

What funny chance that Brian Eno was in NYC in 1978 and happened to see these four groups in a concert and so quickly recorded them! This album is awesome as a snapshot of a specific place and time…and sound, since these quintessential No Wave acts at that moment were moving together: electric guitar as atonal noise-maker, wild singing that both in style and in content is all about chaos, a rhythm section tied to a sense of beat and melody and so keeping the music still moored securely in the style of rock. All four of these groups had this album as their first LP release and all dissolved not long after (although many of the musicians involved had long and interesting careers). What makes this music feel fixed in a specific, small scene is the semi-amateurish playing as well as the obvious kinship to the larger movements swirling around at the time: punk, post-punk, new wave. But for almost the same reasons, it has a universal relevance that is worth preserving: what a pure expression of the native, youthful impulse to pick up the instruments of a movement that moves you and both adopt it and react against it! That is, to make rock music but to willfully refuse to learn guitar chords or play in any way other than one’s own freely developed technique. To go high and low at the same time. I think the songs that achieve the best effect here are the last two on the album, in which Arto Lindsay’s guitar coats the tracks with sheets and shards of noise. I’m not sure if there is direct influence but I hear this sound reflected in the work of a number of brilliant post-punk guitarists of the next few years who fed such jarring atonality back in with some degree of conventional melody, for example early Public Image Limited, Husker Du, Gang of Four, and Sonic Youth. Unfortunately, little of the No Wave scene is on Spotify; this channel is the best place to explore the relevant documents. Thanks so much, MrNoWave!

@@bhavyakukkar It bothers me to no end that Merzbow is the face of noise. He's usually only good when he's collaborating with other artists. His music tends to be very boring. Not much really goes on, although rare occurrences like "Antimonument" and "Rainbow Electronics" are pretty good. There are so many noise artists and groups that are so much better (Hijokaidan, Keiji Haino, Les Rallizes Dénudés, Ground-Zero, Masonna etc.)

Thanks for putting this on Youtube. In the late 70s I was a lost adolescent in the hinterlands of America in a very predictable and boring culture. I heard this album and I knew what I had to do. Move to New York. From the perspective of 2020 this seems like a record of bands from the stone age. But if you lived in the East Village or the Lower East Side below Houston this music makes perfect sense. I once saw Lydia Lunch, after she had left Teenage Jesus, performing at a club called TR3, off of Canal. The band was in a corner of the room, on the same level as the audience (no stage). Lydia was fronting the band. She wore a tight leather jumpsuit and 8" stiletto heals, which got her up to 5'2" (I mean she was a short woman). The band played, Lydia screamed out her poetry, and the crowd surged forward. Without missing a beat, Lydia brought her foot up to about groin level and proceded to control the crowd by stabbing them with her heel. She probably spent half the set on one leg. Consumate artist! LOL. On a different note, do you know of any recordings of Mr. Bubble? They were a band that I sometimes performed with as the "color man."

Did anyone of you know that Pat Place, Adele Bertei and Robin Crutchfield were from Cleveland. I hung around with Pere Ubu and Human Switchboard back then from 1975 (age 15) to 1982 (22); the only real black kid in Cleveland who loved them and followed their every words. Eventually the Switchboard had a relatively solid booking for months at the Pepper something in NYC. When that gig ran its course, they came back to Cleveland for a year or 2, and finally went about their separate ways. Crazy thing: Metz lives in New York now, Myra was in Jersey last I heard, and Pfeifer was a Creative Musical talent, listening to whether a band was good or a miss. Miss those days so bad, and I'll never forget the bond I had with Scott Krauss, Ron Metz and Tony Maimone (who got me into a lot places a 16/17 year would not be admitted, even if they looked25 (and I didn't, lol).

first time i heard this was around the same time i fell in love with Sonic Youth. was watching Lee Ranaldo’s What’s In My Bag? episode and he totally persuaded me to listen to this whole record. i was 12. my life completely changed. this record gave me courage to pursue music and taught me there are no boundaries when it comes to the music you want to make

Various Artists - No New York 1258pm 25.8.23 recall, if you will, the first oxbow album... ummmmmm... this guy seems to have inspired that effort. the 2nd track in from this compilation - the james chance contortions, i think you call them. in fact seems james chance mars etc seemed to be enmeshed within that particular lp. which you should all go out an and buy now... (Fuckfest Album by Oxbow Fuckfest is the debut album of Oxbow, released in 1989 on the band's own CFY Records, and later successively through Pathological Records, Crippled Dick Hot Wax, and Hydra Head Recordings....)
