The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.
Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.
Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Pröfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.
Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.
Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.

Par main tujhe na paa sakun
Hai dil ko teri justaju
Par main tujhe na paa sakun
Main hoon shab tu subah
Dono jud ke judaa
Main hoon labh tu dua
Dono jud ke judaa
Hai dil ko teri aarzoo
Par main tujhe na paa sakun
Hai dil ko teri justaju
Par main tujhe na paa sakun
Main hoon shab tu subah
Dono jud ke judaa
Main hoon labh tu dua
Dono jud ke judaa
Madno, mashuko, dilbaro, madno re
Madno madno.
Kayi khwaab dil tujhko le kar sajaaye
Par khauf yeh bhi kahin par sataaye
Ghar yeh bhi tootey toh phir hoga kya re
Mujhe raas aati hain khushiyaan kahan re
Kyon dil ko dukhana bewajah madno re
Kyon dil ko dukhana bewajah
Phir aansu bahana ik dafa
Phir aansu bahana ik dafa
Main hoon shab tu subah
Dono jud ke judaa
Main hoon labh tu dua
Dono jud ke judaa
Madno, mashuko, dilbaro, madno re
Tu hi to har pal bandha hai
Lamhon ki inn zanjeeron mein
Tu hi to har dum raha hai
Khwaabon ki har taaberon mein
Tu hi to har din dikha hai
Dhundli ujli tasveeron mein
Tere hi to hai khusboo mujh mein haan madno re
Tere hi to hai khusboo mujh mein haan
Ab tu hi to har su har jagah
Ab tu hi to har su har jagah
Bhi chus shab sa subah
Meelyth doshvai judaa
Bhi chus labh sa dua
Meelyth doshvai judaa
Madno, mashuko, dilbaro, madno re
Haan tera saaya to main hoon
Par sang tere na reh sakun
Haan iss safar me to main hoon
Par sang tere na ruk sakun
Main hoon shab tu subah
Dono jud ke judaa
Main hoon labh tu dua
Dono jud ke judaa
Madno, mashuko,
dilbaro, madno re
The above lyrics are from the song "Outro" by Various Artists. The lyrics start with the singer's longing for their love, but confessing to not being able to have them. They sing that they desire and eagerly look for their love but are unable to find them. The lines "Main hoon shab tu subah, dono jud ke judaa" mean "I am night, you are the morning, both separated but joined." The lyrics suggest that the relationship between the singer and their love is complex and possibly distant. The use of the word "madno" repeats throughout the song, and it's unclear what it means in this context. Overall, the song Outro is emotional and possibly melancholic.
The song was part of the soundtrack of the Bollywood movie "Lamhaa," which was released in 2010. The producer of the movie, Bunty Walia, wanted to create an engaging soundtrack and reached out to Mithoon and Pritam to contribute to the music. They collaborated with other Indian musicians to produce a fusion soundtrack that blended Western and Eastern music. The result was an album that featured various styles like rock, classical, and Sufi.

Oh my beloved, oh my heart's desire, oh my valentine, oh my beloved
Kayi khwaab dil tujhko le kar sajaaye
So many dreams decorate you
Par khauf yeh bhi kahin par sataaye
But fear also haunts me
Ghar yeh bhi tootey toh phir hoga kya re
If this home also breaks, then what will happen?
Mujhe raas aati hain khushiyaan kahan re
Where do I find happiness that suits me?
Kyon dil ko dukhana bewajah madno re
Why do you hurt my heart for no reason, my beloved?
Phir aansu bahana ik dafa
Let me shed tears for one last time
Tu hi to har pal bandha hai
You are tied to every moment
Lamhon ki inn zanjeeron mein
In the chains of time
Tu hi to har dum raha hai
You exist in every breath
Khwaabon ki har taaberon mein
In every dream and fantasy
Tu hi to har din dikha hai
You appear in every blurry picture
Dhundli ujli tasveeron mein
In every hazy memory
Tere hi to hai khusboo mujh mein haan madno re
I carry your fragrance, my beloved
Ab tu hi to har su har jagah
Now, you are everywhere and in everything
Bhi chus shab sa subah
Even night tastes like morning
Meelyth doshvai judaa
Even dirty paths seem connected
Bhi chus labh sa dua
Even meaningless words sound like prayers
Meelyth doshvai judaa
Even dirty paths seem connected
Haan tera saaya to main hoon
Yes, I am your shadow
Par sang tere na reh sakun
But I can't be with you always
Haan iss safar me to main hoon
Yes, I am on this journey
Par sang tere na ruk sakun
But I can't stop and stay with you
Madno, mashuko,
Oh my beloved, oh my heart's desire
dilbaro, madno re
Oh my valentine, oh my beloved
