The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.
Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.
Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Pröfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.
Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.
Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.
Play The Game
Various Artists Lyrics

And it's bigger than your life
But it's only what you're hearing
Will you still remember?
When the morning light has come.
Will the songs be playing over and over
Till you do it all over again?
Can you tell me if it's wrong or right?
Is it worth the time, is it worth the price
Do you see yourself in a white spotlight?
Then play the game tonight.
And when the curtains open
To the roaring of the crowd
You will feel it all around you
Then it finally happens
And it's all come true for you
And the songs are playing over and over
Till you do it over again
The lyrics of "Play the Game" by Various Artists delve into the concept of living life to the fullest and taking risks to achieve one's dreams. The singer asks if the listener can tell if it's wrong or right to play the game, and if it's worth the time and price. They ask if the listener can envision themselves in the white spotlight and if so, they should play the game.
The song's message is clear: pursue what you love and embrace every moment, as life moves quickly and opportunities may not come twice. The lyrics reflect the idea that living life to the fullest requires taking risks, following your passions and living in the moment. The emphasis on the songs playing over and over until the listener does it again highlights the importance of repeating the process, continuing to take risks and pursue one’s dreams.
Overall, "Play the Game" is a motivational song that encourages listeners to take bold actions and pursue their passions, rather than staying on the sidelines and playing it safe.
