The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.
Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.
Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Pröfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.
Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.
Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.

A young Prince lived in a shining castle
Although he had everything his heart desired
The Prince was spoiled, selfish and unkind
But then, one winter's night
An old beggar woman came to the castle
And offered him a single rose
Repulsed by her haggard appearance
The Prince sneered at the Gift
And turned the old woman away
But she warned him not to be deceived by appearances
For Beauty is found within
And when he dismissed her again
The old woman's ugliness melted away to reveal a beautiful enchantress
The prince tried to apologize
But it was too late, for she had seen that there was no love in his heart
And as punishment, she transformed him into a hideous beast
And placed a powerful spell on the castle and all who lived there
Ashamed of his monstrous form
The beast concealed himself inside his castle
With a magic mirror as his only window to the outside world
The rose she had offered was truly an enchanted rose
Which would bloom until his twenty-first year
If he could learn to love another
And earn her love in return by the time the last petal fell
Then the spell would be broken
If not, he would be doomed to remain a beast for all time
As the years passed
He fell into despair and lost all hope
For who could ever learn to love a beast
The song Prologue is a narrative introduction to the famous story of Beauty and the Beast. It sets the stage for the story by telling the tale of a young prince who is selfish and unkind. Despite having everything he desires, he shows no kindness towards others. On one winter's night, an old beggar woman comes to the castle and offers him a single rose in return for shelter from the cold. The Prince, repulsed by her appearance, sneers at her gift and turns her away.
However, the old woman is an enchantress who warns the Prince not to be deceived by appearances, for beauty is found from within. When he dismisses her, her ugliness melts away and reveals her true form as a beautiful enchantress. The Prince tries to apologize, but it is too late as the enchantress sees that there is no love in his heart. As punishment, she turns him into a hideous beast and places a powerful spell on the castle.
The song ends by posing a question: who could ever learn to love a beast? It paves the way for the story's protagonist, Belle, to answer that question and learn to love the Beast regardless of his physical appearance.
Overall, the song's lyrics set the tone for the story and introduce the main characters. It highlights the theme of inner beauty and addresses appearances that are often deceiving.
