The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.
Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.
Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Pröfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.
Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.
Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.
Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head
Various Artists Lyrics

And just like the guy whose feet are too big for his bed
Nothin' seems to fit
Those raindrops are fallin' on my head, they keep fallin'
So I just did me some talkin' to the sun
And I said I didn't like the way he got things done
Sleepin' on the job
But there's one thing I know
The blues they send to meet me won't defeat me
It won't be long till happiness steps up to greet me
Raindrops keep fallin' on my head
But that doesn't mean my eyes will soon be turnin' red
Cryin's not for me
'Cause I'm never gonna stop the rain by complainin'
Because I'm free
Nothin's worryin' me
It won't be long till happiness steps up to greet me
Raindrops keep fallin' on my head
But that doesn't mean my eyes will soon be turnin' red
Cryin's not for me
'Cause I'm never gonna stop the rain by complainin'
Because I'm free
Nothin's worryin' me
The lyrics of Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head, originally written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David for the 1969 film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, speak about the experience of someone who is feeling down and unsuccessful. The singer compares himself to someone whose feet are too big for his bed, unable to find a comfortable place in the world. The incessant raindrops that keep falling on his head are a metaphor for the struggles he faces, unable to find a sense of belonging or purpose. He even tries to talk to the sun, which may represent a higher power or the universe, expressing his dissatisfaction with how his life is turning out, but the rain persists.
However, despite the difficulties he faces, the singer showcases a resilient spirit that is determined not to let the blues defeat him. He acknowledges that there is nothing he can do to stop the rain by complaining, but instead chooses to focus on the positive, knowing that happiness will step up to greet him soon. The singer recognizes that crying and complaining will not solve anything but being free from worry is the key to finding happiness.
This song can be interpreted in many ways. It can be seen as a symbol of persevering through challenges or persevering through hardships. Whether it is related to romantic relationships, social class, or a financial situation, the song suggests that there will always be obstacles, but that happiness can still be found. In its original interpretation, the song was meant to be a representation of Butch and Sundance's free and carefree spirit.
