The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.

Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.

Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Pröfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.

Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.

Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.

The hair cutting scene is definitely something for western audiences, where it's generally seen to be feminine if you have long hair. I think you're absolutely right about accuracy vs heart though. It's obviously bad to be flagrantly wrong about the setting you're trying to appropriate for your story, but I'd rather someone put genuine care into a good story with mistakes than whatever Mulan 2020 was going for.

So, I realized something about Crickey. He’s meant to be lucky, yet he’s the whole reason Mulan messed up with the Matchmaker. But if you think about it, if Mulan had done well and been married, she would’ve been absolutely miserable. Because Crickey messed it up, she went into battle, won the war, and got real happiness. I feel that some of these inaccuracies are actually the animators and writers using shorthand to reach their audience better. For example, it’ll be far easier for the standard Western audience to understand “Now all of China knows you’re here!” Rather than “now all of the dynasty knows you’re here!”

Same for the hair cutting scene, again for a standard Western audience shorter hair is typically associated with masculinity so her cutting her hair makes it easier for people to understand what is going on even if from a historical standpoint it doesn't make sense. Of course the point of the video is mostly just to point out the inaccuracies so you know about them, I don't think she's trying to say that all of them are inherently flawed.

Me being a basic white girl from rural Missouri who never went anywhere - Mulan was my all time favorite movie as a little kid. I loved the music, the story and the culture. It was my first real introduction to a completely different one. It's nice to know that it wasn't just a slap in the face to chinese culture.

Hello from Rwanda. Just an interesting note, but we have a story here about a girl called Ndabaga. It goes pretty much the same as Mulan. Her father is in the army and you could only leave if a son or brother came to relieve you. He only has a daughter, so she cuts off her breasts and learns to fight in order to take his place. She beats the men at everything and some of them become jealous. Eventually, one of them discovers that she is a girl and tells the king, who falls in love with her for her dedication to her father, marries her, and decrees that anyone who does not have a son to replace them can go home.

There's something that is nice in the animated movie is that you can feel they did quite a bit of research on Chinese history and yeah it may not be super accurate but I feel like you can feel the artistic team's enthusiasm for its visual elements, and little details. It feels more like a homage than a ripoff.

I feel like most Chinese people are not super picky about historical accuracy since the historical c-dramas or even fiction (as you mentionned, historical fanfic) are kind of all over the place as well, as my dad loves to point out. I think it would be sort of hypocritical to say only Chinese people are allowed to have fun with that, which is why Mulan 1998 feels quite okay. The reason why the 2020 version doesn't feel that way is also because the chinses elements in the story feel more like a constraints to the creator who end up kind of throwing a bunch of "Chinese" stuff randomly into a story rather than having fun exploring these elements.

One thing I was laughing so hard while Mushu was getting the fireworks. In english as well as in german he says "Your worst nightmare." I Swedish he says "Jag är Batman" which is translated into "I'm Batman" and I just couldn't stop laughing because it took me by surprise and the knowledge that batman was called "Läderlappen" in Sweden instead of Batman.

I think the Chinese stereotype(and larger Asian stereotype too) of "honor" is actually from us immigrant families. My grandparents grew up in China and immigrated into the US just before my father was born. "Honor" was sorta an emphasized thing, though we never really said "honor" per se. As a kid I definitely explained things to my friends just as the "honor" thing since it conveyed 90% of what it needed to much easier than explaining that I'm terrified of dissapointing the legacy of my grandfather(who passed before I was born) and his success in America.

What I think he means is, for example, people from Isreal are Asian. Some people from Egypt are Asian. People from Iran are Asian. Most people from Turkey are Asian and on and on and on.
But then there's people like you who just sum up all orientals as "Asians."
While it's true they are Asians, it's dismissive of other Asian people.
Also the idea that there's an east asian steroetype is also spurious. Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Filipino, Laosian, cambodians and others all have different cultural norms and are not "all the same" like people seem to think.

It took me until right now to realize that having the guy soldiers dress up in drag at the end was a bit more than a "man in a dress" joke. Like, this is a movie about a person pretending to be a sex/gender they're not in order to play a hero role how did I not see that they are paralleling Mulan's story by having her friends break in as concubines and help save the day from a traditionally feminine role face palm

I also love how Mulan has to train and learn to use her strengths and talents as opposed to just being wicked strong from the start. It plagues both male and female hero stories when the main character has no development and is just instantly good and the best at everything. Mulan became an even stronger "strong female character" to me as a little girl because she didn't naturally have a conan the barbarian level of physical strength in order for her to be a great warrior (in fact, she was appropriately the weakest one at the beginning and the only one Shang Li sent home for being such a wimp). She developed her skills with training and determination but what sets her apart is her wits. She did use "strength" and "discipline" to climb the pole like Shang Li said she would need to, but in the end it was her problem solving ability that got her to the top. She likely never would have been able to climb it with brute strength alone, but she didn't need to because physical power (traditionally masculine trait) isn't the only way you can excel.

Before I thought the message of this movie was "girls can be just as good as guys if they try hard enough" but now im realizing a more appropriate theme is "Strength in femininity". Realizing this now, I see the true climax of the film being the moment when Mulan stops the sword with her fan. To me, this was "strength in femininity" symbolized.

In Lady General Hua Mulan (1964), the soldiers refer to her as Brother Hua throughout the movie, but the General, who is simply referred to as General Li, does call her Hua Ping several times. I loved Mulan growing up. I felt a sense of subconscious camaraderie with Mulan, and how she had to pretend to be a man to keep her father safe. Obviously it isn't remotely the same, but as a trans woman who felt the need to hide that from my father, (out of fear, but y'know) I felt like I could relate to her. Shan-Yu's name essentially being Yams just brightened my morning honestly! I also had no idea him and his army were suppose to represent a certain race, as I kid I always thought he was some ghoul and not human due to his eyes and strength; also his coldness.
I like that even though not all of it's accurate it's still mostly tasteful or was done a specific way so chinese audience could still interpret it (and a few western things so the west didn't feel totally lost the entire time, the breakfast smile made me smile as a kid because tht's such a goofy thing to do here in the west); like the writing being a modern modern chinese form instead of the kind you'd see back then. Really interesting to get some insight on the shrine though! As a kid even I thought it was a bit odd even though I didn't really know the culture. Most inaccuries were either an overlook, could be overlooked/unnoticed, or were simply done for comedic effect which gave the movie a lot of the charm people loved it for

i remember having an argument with somebody once about the movie hercules because it didn't follow the actual myth and had too many historical inaccuracies but like, its a great movie that was made for kids. I think it hercules' original myth he had to kill his own father or something (unless im thinking of oedipus but a lot of them killed their dads in those stories ok) and they couldn't have shown that, but it was still obvious that it was ancient greece, and the story still worked. in my opinion you're right- historical accuracy in these movies is cool to see and a fun little easter egg if you know the history involved, and it should be at least somewhat culturally accurate, but the main purpose of a movie is to tell a good story and entertain the audience.

In the og myths Hercules was driven into a battle rage by Hera his STEPmother (cruel stepmothers go back WAAY farther than Walt Disney himself) and killed his wife (yes, Megara) and kids and had to do those 12 labors (it was supposed to be 10 but he got marked down for 2 of them)

My coworker introduced me to this channel the other day and I have to thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving me insights into ancient Chinese culture! I love all world history but admit that I know more about Japanese history, in part because my wife loves the culture so much she is semi-fluent in Japanese. China has a very long a rich history and I am always eager to learn more! The only thing I respectfully question is Shan Yu's eyes. While I can definitely see how their color could be considered as racist, I always saw his eyes as the same color as the hawk he had with him.

Simplicity in art also has value. People don't look down on cave paintings just because they aren't Renaissance level of layered. In some ways, conveying something with as few brush strokes as possible is harder than oil painting.

Loved this!! Very interesting analysis! this is the first video I watch of this creator but I'm definitely following her now :D
The only detail I wanted to point out is that the song dynasty didn't follow the tang. I guess It is the next 'great' dynasty after the tang however the period of the 5 dynasties and 10 kingdoms comes before the Song, so of those 5 dynasties the later Liang would be the one following the Tang. But I'm being nitpicky tbh and since it was a period of great political chaos I understand why she'd 'skip' it to simplify. Still a wonderful video tho! And I love the historical factoids! <3

Medieval European peasants clearly ate nothing but potatoes, being so poor and all. Yeah, it's easy to think that, considering the staple food it is today. It's hard to imagine Europe without potatoes. The introduction of the potato has probably saved Europe from countless famines (though it also caused some in Ireland).
This is why people who cry "cultural appropriation" are idiots. They likely don't know what truly originated in their own country. They probably embrace many traditions and food stuffs that were imported anywhere from multi-millenias to less than a century ago.

I watched Mulan in our Ancient China unit in 2nd grade and ohhhh...it awakened something in me. I think I checked out every single book on Chinese history in our library. I'm glad that it's a decently accurate movie, as it's one of the reasons I love history to this day.

While I know the cutting her hair off is considered a form of bodily mutilation and an insult to her family, you mentioned on Avatar Book 2 video it's also a form of self-execution. So you can also interpret the haircut as Mulan executing herself because she's going into a war knowing she's likely going to die one way or another.
Also I can tell you from experience men's hair always doesn't grow as fast as most women's and that doing a simple top knot with such long hair is easier said than done unless you try this coil method.

Rewatching this not long after watching the videos about Raya... Over 20 years and Disney STILL hasn't learned the value of rice because what's her name (it has been hot and Disney character names have melted out of my brain) was talking about how her kingdom hadn't had rice in a long time. Did they really forget to give Mulan and her family more food or did they think rice was luxurious to eat alone?

Mulan strikes me as a figure much like King Arthur. The idea of them is so ubiquitous in the culture that I'm convinced such a person did exist. In the case of Mulan, a woman military commander whose leadership saved the day. But records were spotty and/or destroyed, so we're left with oral traditions that have been passed down, with details being added for people to put their own original spin on the foundation tale
