The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.
Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.
Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Pröfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.
Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.
Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.

Bound by wild desire, I fell into a ring of fire
I fell into a burning ring of fire
I went down, down, down and the flames went higher
And it burns, burns, burns, the ring of fire, the ring of fire
I fell into a burning ring of fire
And it burns, burns, burns, the ring of fire, the ring of fire
The taste of love is sweet when hearts like ours meet
I fell for you like a child, oh but the fire went wild
I fell into a burning ring of fire
I went down, down, down and the flames went higher
And it burns, burns, burns, the ring of fire, the ring of fire
I fell into a burning ring of fire
I went down, down, down and the flames went higher
And it burns, burns, burns, the ring of fire, the ring of fire
And it burns, burns, burns, the ring of fire, the ring of fire
The lyrics in "Ring of Fire" by Johnny Cash are about falling in love and the intense and all-consuming nature of that love. The imagery of fire being used in the lyrics is a metaphor for the passion and intensity of the love that the singer is experiencing. The first verse sets the tone, with the singer acknowledging that love is a burning thing, and it makes a fiery ring. He then describes his own experience of falling into this ring of fire, which is so intense that he's "bound by wild desire." He repeats this verse later in the song, emphasizing the intensity of the love he's experiencing.
The chorus repeats the imagery of the burning ring of fire, with the singer describing how he went down, down, down into the flames, and how the fire burns, burns, burns. The repetition of these lines emphasizes the all-consuming nature of the love he's describing. The second verse shifts slightly, with the singer describing how the taste of love is sweet when two hearts meet. However, this sweetness quickly turns to intensity, as the fire goes wild and burns higher and higher.
Overall, the lyrics in "Ring of Fire" are a powerful reflection of the intensity of falling in love, and the way that love can consume a person entirely, like a burning ring of fire.
