The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.
Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.
Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Pröfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.
Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.
Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.
Sailing
Various Artists Lyrics

It's not far down to paradise
At least it's not for me
And if the wind is right you can sail away
And find tranquility
The canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
It's not far to never never land
No reason to pretend
And if the wind is right you can find the joy
Of innocence again
The canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Believe me
Sailing
Takes me away
To where I've always heard it could be
Just a dream and the wind to carry me
And soon I will be free
Fantasy
It gets the best of me
When I'm sailing
All caught up in the reverie
Every word is a symphony
Won't you believe me
Sailing
Takes me away
To where I've always heard it could be
Just a dream and the wind to carry me
And soon I will be free
It's not far back to sanity
At least it's not for me
And when the wind is right you can sail away
And find serenity
The canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Believe me
Sailing
Takes me away
To where I've always heard it could be
Just a dream and the wind to carry me
And soon I will be free
In the song "Sailing" by Various Artists, the lyrics describe the idea of escaping to paradise through a journey on a boat. The first verse sets the scene and describes how paradise seems not too far away, especially with the possibility of a good wind to help the journey. The chorus emphasizes the power of sailing to take the singer away from their current reality and into a place where they can be free. The second verse adds to this idea, suggesting that innocence and joy can be found once again while on this journey.
Throughout the song, there is a sense of longing for a better place and a desire to escape. The idea of sailing acts as a metaphor for this need to remove oneself from the present situation and find a place of peace and happiness. The lyrics also touch on the idea of fantasy and how it can capture our minds and imaginations, leading us on this journey. The final verse provides a sense of hope, suggesting that even when the singer returns to reality, they will have found a newfound sense of serenity and peace.
Overall, "Sailing" is a song that speaks to the idea of escape and the power of journeys to transform our minds and souls. The metaphor of sailing is used to convey this message, painting a picture of a world beyond our current reality that is waiting to be discovered.
