The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.
Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.
Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Pröfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.
Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.
Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.

And rattle those pots and pans
Get out in that kitchen
And rattle those pots and pans
Well, roll my breakfast
′Cause I'm a hungry man
I said shake, rattle and roll
I said shake, rattle and roll
I said shake, rattle and roll
Well, you′ll never do nothin'
To save your doggone soul
Wearin' those dresses
Your hair done up so nice
Wearin′ those dresses
Your hair done up so nice
You look so warm
But your heart is cold as ice
I said shake, rattle and roll
I said shake, rattle and roll
I said shake, rattle and roll
I said shake, rattle and roll
Well, you′ll never do nothin'
To save your doggone soul
(Go)
(Go)
(Go)
(Go)
(Go)
I′m like a one-eyed cat
Peepin' in a sea food store
I′m like a one-eyed cat
Peepin' in a sea food store
I can look at you
Tell you don′t love me no more
I believe you're doin' me wrong
And now I know
I believe you′re doin′ me wrong
And now I know
The more I work
The faster my money go
I said shake, rattle and roll
I said shake, rattle and roll
I said shake, rattle and roll
I said shake, rattle and roll
Well, you'll never do nothin′
To save your doggone soul
(Shake, rattle and roll)
"Shake, Rattle and Roll" is a classic rock and roll song that originated in the early 1950s and has been covered by various artists in different musical styles. The lyrics suggest a party vibe, urging people to come to the kitchen, rattle those pots and pans, and make breakfast for a hungry man. The repeated phrase "shake, rattle and roll" seems to encourage dancing and letting loose, with the implication that it will save one's "doggone soul".
The lyrics also hint at a darker side beneath the party atmosphere. The singer notes the women in the room, dressed up and looking nice, but suggests that their hearts are cold as ice. He feels like a one-eyed cat peeping in a seafood store, which may suggest a sense of longing or alienation. He also believes that someone has done him wrong, and that no matter how hard he works, his money disappears too quickly.
Artists who have covered "Shake, Rattle and Roll" include Bill Haley and the Comets, Elvis Presley, Big Joe Turner, and Huey Lewis and the News. Each artist brings their own style to the song, but the basic message remains the same: let loose and have a good time, but be aware of the darker aspects of life.
