The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.

Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.

Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Pröfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.

Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.

Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.

This song was from around 1951, and Clyde MacPhatter was one of the member of Billy Ward & the Dominoes, but you could hear Clyde's voice in the background. Absolutely, one of many, the so called rock tunes of the 50's were hardly different then the Jump Blues of the mid-late 40's, Big Joe Turner, T-Bone Walker, Lowell Fulsom, Johnny Otis, Lois Jordan, Hank Ballard were already rockin' and rockin' hard! They were called race records then and at the time were not well recognized in the national spotlight and outside of black settings.

"The people who emulated each other in using backbeat more and more on songs about 'rocking' during 1947-1953 were a bunch of (almost entirely) black musicians; what that had to do with Presley is nothing." Examples of musicians who weren't black who were making rockers before Presley began recording are Curtis Gordon with "Rompin' And Stompin'" and Kay Starr with "Oh Babe." I feel the problem with this debate is that there is no "first" rock and roll record, music was evolving into what we now call rock and roll and I'm sure some folks see "rock and roll" differently as some other folks do, for more than one reason. It's the process not the destination that really matters. Great record, regardless and it's popularity made it a game changer as well as the music itself.

I remember a teacher playing this as "the first rock and roll song". I would later hear "Rocket 88", and even "Rock Around The Clock"! Rock and roll evolved slowly. Many R&B songs from the late '40's are as close to doowop of the mid-late '50's as you can get. I would say this cut and Rocket 88 are a tie score, if you need to have an answer. By the way if you can't see that "Sixty Minute Man" isn't sexual, you're not very intuitive. "If your man ain't treating you right , Come up and see ol' dan, I rock 'em, roll 'em all night long, I'm a sixty-minute man..."

"Rocket 88" was not from 1949, but March of '51. In my opinion it is a blues boogie record. The drummer was playing a shuffle, not a driving 2 and 4 beat. As a matter of fact the record was influenced by "Rocket 88 Boogie" from '49 and "Cadillac Boogie," also from '49. There are plenty of boogie records that predate "Rocket 88." The driving beat on the 2 and 4 is what separates Rock and Roll from the other styles of music that precede it. In my opinion "Rocket 88" is not Rock and Roll.

Ike Turner would agree. I never considered "Rocket 88" rock and roll. Sam Phillips claimed it was but it may have been because of Bill Haley re-recording it. But the original "Rocket 88" just wasn't.

@@timmy841212 I wouldn't call Bill Haley's version of "Rocket 88" rock and roll, either. It was just a Western swing version of Brenston's record. And I feel the same way about "Crazy Man Crazy", Haley's first national pop hit. That was a Western swing band imitating the Treniers, again a boogie or shuffle rhythm. I'd say that "Gee" by the Crows (early '54) was the first national pop hit that virtually everyone agrees was rock and roll.
