The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.
Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.
Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Pröfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.
Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.
Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.

Speaking of school and teachers.........
The year of my little story was 1978. I was 14.
The school I attended was in a tiny town of about 250-300, in rural Kansas.
The music/choir teacher at our school was a woman, who was around 40 at the time.
Very devout Christian.
Anyway...One week, she told my class, that if we had any "rock and roll albums", we each could bring an album to class, and we could play a song or two from each of them (on the turntable), during class, to show diversity in musical tastes to the rest of the class.
I brought in my copy of KISS Alive II.
Kept it hidden all day, because I knew that I would be teased by my classmates (I always got teased and bullied, even without them knowing that I liked KISS).
The moment I took out my album, and the teacher seen the cover... she freaked out!🤣
I remember her shouting, "We aren't going to listen to any of that devil worship filth!!"
And she refused to let me prove that it wasn't any worse than anything anyone else had brought.
And I was right... from that day forward, I got teased even more, because I liked KISS.🤣
All these years later, they are still my favorite band.😎

@DT I just finished scrolling through the whole list of top picks and was very surprised that the Brothers weren't mentioned until your post. I agree, AB Live @ Fillmore East is definitely one of the best, possibly the best ever. Some of my other top picks: The Band - Rock of Ages, Before the Flood (with Dylan) and the Last Waltz (with so many great performances), Lou Reed's Rock 'n' Roll Animal (already mentioned by others), Neil Young's Live Rust (espec. sides 3&4 but the whole album is great). I'm sure there are others that I'm not thinking of right now but reading through these messages fills up my "in my head playlist" for the next week or two!

KISS Alive! -100.000 Years.
The Real Corn Pop
I was in basic training in September of 1974. One of the guys was asking everyone if they had heard of KISS, and went on about how good they were live. Nobody had heard of them and of course we gave him an extremely hard time about the name KISS, if you know what I mean. Then, a little over a year later, there they were, busting out with a hard hitting rock album. Memories.
