The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.
Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.
Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Pröfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.
Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.
Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.

A long long time ago
Or should I say
I should have met you on a train
A long long time ago
I would have watched you
Looking out the window
Staring at the rain
All I would have said to you is
I love you
A hundred thousand times
Don't close the door
Don't close the door
But since I didn't meet you there
And since I met you here
I wanted to explain to you
How certain things
They disappear
If you don't keep them warm
Eventually they freeze
All I would have said to you is
I love you
A hundred thousand times
Don't close the door
Don't close the door
You eat and drink the city
But you want to breath the village
Your milk is getting sour
And your eyes are weary
Can you take me with you
Can I join you on the ride
Let's take a train
Let's take a train
I love you
A hundred thousand times
Don't close the door
Don't close the door
The song "Train" by Various Artists is a beautiful expression of unrequited love and missed opportunities. The lyrics speak of a missed connection with someone that the singer believes they may have met on a train a long time ago. The singer describes how they would have watched this person looking out of the window and would have told them "I love you" a hundred thousand times. However, since they didn't meet on a train, the singer has to explain how certain things disappear if you don't keep them warm and how important it is to not let opportunities slip away.
The singer goes on to describe how the person they are singing to has become tired and weary, and how they want to leave the city and breathe the fresh air of the village. The imagery used in the lyrics is vivid and evocative, painting a picture of two people taking a train ride together and falling in love. The repeated refrain of "I love you" reinforces the singer's feelings of love and longing for this person.
Overall, the song "Train" is a poignant and heartfelt expression of love and the importance of not letting opportunities slip away. The vivid and poetic lyrics, coupled with the beautiful melody, make this song a classic and timeless piece of music.
