The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.
Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.
Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Pröfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.
Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.
Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.

Even though summer's almost over:
Alright you Chipmunks
Ready to sing your song?
I'll say we are
Yeah, let's sing it now!
Okay, Simon?
Okay
Okay, Theodore?
Okay
Okay, Alvin? Alvin? Alvin!
Where's my bathing suit?
Forget about that. Are you ready?
Okay
Summer, summertime is near
Time for speedos and time for beer
???
I can't find my bathing suit
We can hardly stand the wait
Please summer, don't be late
Not sure about the middle section, other than Dave giving Alvin his bathing suit.
Oh, and here's hour bathing suit, Alvin... Alvin? Alvin!
Oh, thanks!
???
I just found my bathing suit
We can hardly stand the wait
Please summer, don't be late
We can hardly stand the wait
Please summer, don't be late
Very good, boys
Let's sing it agan
Yeah, let's sing it again
No, that's enough, let's not overdo it
What do you mean overdo it? We gotta sing it again!
Now wait a minute, boys
Yeah, let's beat it, I'd like to sing it again
Alvin... it's not that... not but, what?
Theodore, just a minute...
Simon will you cut that out, get off me

Lyrics:
[Dave]: Alright, you Chipmunks, ready to sing your song?
[Alvin]; I’d say we are
[Theodore]; Yeah, let’s sing it now!
[Dave]; Okay, Simon?
[Simon]; O.K.
[Dave]; Okay, Theodore?
[Theodore]; O.K.
[Dave]; Okay, Alvin?…Alvin?…ALVIN!
[Alvin];OKAY!
[Chipmunks];
Christmas, Christmas time is near
Time for toys and time for cheer
We’ve been good, but we can’t last
Hurry, Christmas, hurry fast
Want a plane that loops the loop
[Alvin]; Me, I want a Hula-Hoop
[Chipmunks];
We can hardly stand the wait
Please Christmas don’t be late
[Dave]; O.K., fellas. Get ready
That was very good, Simon
[Simon]; Naturally!
[Dave]; Very good, Theodore
[Theodore]; He he he he
[Dave]; uh, Alvin, you were a little flat
Watch it, Alvin…Alvin?…ALVIN!
[Alvin]; OKAY!
[Chipmunks];
Want a plane that loops the loop
[Alvin]; I still want a Hula-Hoop
[Chipmunks];
We can hardly stand the wait
Please Christmas don’t be late
We can hardly stand the wait
Please Christmas don’t be late
[Dave]; Very good, boys
[Theodore]; Let’s sing it again!
[Simon]; Yeah, let’s sing it again
[Dave]; No, that’s enough, let’s not overdo it.
What do you mean overdo it?
[Chipmunks]; We gotta sing it again!
[Dave]; Now wait a minute, boys
[Alvin]; Yeah, let’s beat it, I’d like to sing it again
[Dave]; Alvin…it’s not that …not but, what?
Theodore, just a minute …
Simon, will you cut that out, get off me

A few new versions I thought about: (Hopefully this all makes sense.)
Duet version featuring The Chipettes:
It would start out the same, except, instead of Dave saying "Okay, Alvin? Alvin. AAALVIIIN!!!", and Alvin shouting "O-KAY!!!", Dave would just say "Okay, Alvin?", and Alvin would just say something like "Okay."
Then 0:58 to 1:36 wouldn't be instrumental. Dave would complement all of them. But then the Chipettes would appear. Dave would ask who they were, and the Chipettes would say who they were. Then they'd ask if they could sing, and Dave would be like "Why not.". Then they'd sing the whole song, instead of just the second half. But Britney would sing "Me, I want a hula hoop", and Alvin would be like "Wait a minute.". Then the Chipettes would finish. After that, Dave would tell the.Chipettes they did a great job. Then Alvin would say something to Britney about how he was the one who wanted the hula hoop. Not sure what would happen, after that, but I think Dave would somehow settle things, and he'd want both the Chipmunks, and the Chipettes to sing. Then they'd all sing the second half of the song, but Alvin and Britney would both ing sing "We both I want a hula hoop", and then they'd all finish the rest of the chorus. After that, instead of the song ending with the Chipmunks wanting to sing the song again, Dave saying "Let's not overdo it.", and the Chipmunks arguing about overdoing it, Dave would complement both the Chipmunks, and the Chipettes. "Great job, boys. And you were also great, Chipettes." There are two things that could happen after that. (I don't know which would be better.)
1. After they finish singing, and Dave complements the Chipmunks, and the Chipettes, Alvin, and Britney, would start arguing again about the hula hoop, and Dave would try to stop them. "Alvin!? Britney? Enough.". And the song would end with them still arguing.
2. After they finish singing, and Dave complements the Chipmunks, and the Chipettes, he would say "Oh, Alvin? Britney? Here.", (Dave, giving both of them hula hoops) and they both would thank Dave. Then Dave would say he was glad he made both of them happy, and he'd tell them to sing one last chorus, and they'd start singing.
The Chipmunks, and the Chipettes: Want a plane that loops the loop
Alvin and Britney: We both got a hula hoop
The Chipmunks, and the Chipettes: We can hardly stand the wait
Please Christmas, don't be late
We can hardly stand the wait
Please Christmas, don't be late
Then it would end like the original, but both the Chipmunks, and the Chipettes would want to sing again, Dave would say "Let's not overdo it", and they'd all start arguing about overdoing it.
Millennial friendly version:
It would start out the same, but when Alvin shouts "O-KAY!!!", it would be auto-tuned. Then they would start singing, but Alvin would be using auto-tune. Dave would interrupt him (and the music would stop) and ask why he's using that, and Alvin would say that Dave always says he's flat, and he thought that would fix the problem, but Dave wouldn't like it and make him sing without auto-tune. Then the song would start again with them singing, but Alvin would be flat. The music would stop again, and Dave would say it was better when he was using auto-tune. But then he would think the others should also use auto-tune, even though it wouldn't fit the old music. Then the song would start again, but all the original instruments were replaced with synths.
And a while ago, I thought it would be interesting if they made a version of this that had to do with Alvin's harmonica.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGTXtxIU2CU
The version would start out wit Dave saying everything he says in the beginning of this version, but after the first two times he says "Alvin.", Alvin would play a chord on his harmonica. Then in the middle, Dave would say the same he says in the middle, but again, after the first two times he says "Alvin,", Alvin would do the same thing he did in the beginning. Then instead of Dave shouting "ALVIN!", he would say something like "Alvin, would you put that harmonica down and sing?!". Then Alvin would shout "O-KAY!". Then the end would be what I mentioned before.
Dave would say something about Alvin playing the harmonica, and Alvin would insist on playing it. So Dave would say something like "Okay, play your harmonica. Ruin this song.". But then Alvin would play a medley of Christmas songs. (songs that fit the same 3/4 rhythm of this song, like Silent Night) Dave might be impressed, and it wasn't as bad as he thought. (I think the last song in the medley would be Hallelujah, as a tribute toLeonard Cohen.)
the hula hoop, "I was saving this for Christmas, but I think I'll give it to you now.", Alvin would be excited about it. ("A hula hoop!! Thanks Dave.") And Dave would something about how glad he is that Alvin's happy, and say something about singing one more chorus. They'd sing the chorus, but Alvin would change his line to "I just got a hula hoop again, and how happy Alvin was. But then Alvin would start playing Hawaiian music, and Dave would tell him to stop, and that he's ruining the song. And that's how it would end.
Also I find it strange that Theodore's voice lower than Simon's, since I always thought it was the highest. (His voice is definitely higher in the middle, when he laughs.)
Dave: Alright you Chipmunks
Ready to sing your song?
Chipmunks: I'll say we are
Yeah, let's sing it now!
Dave: Okay, Simon?
Simon: Okay
Dave: Okay, Theodore?
Theodore: Okay
Dave: Wait. Isn't your voice supposed to be higher than Simon's?
Theodore: I don't know. You were the one who created our voices.
Dave: Hmm. You have a point. Okay, Alvin? Alvin? Alvin!
Alvin: Okay!

I remember this song being played on the radio back in December 1958. I was in 2nd grade and all the kids in my class could sing the lyrics after the song had been on the air for about a week. I can honestly say that this beat White Christmas when I was growing up.
Big Chet
One of the all-time great Christmas songs!
Rose Calderon
When this song played that meant everybody was in high gear....There was going to be presents and lots of tamales.....This was a great song and it was in all the jukeboxes....music everywhere... Great moments that still exist and bring the spirit of Christmas.....Love it..... Time to put some twinkle lights out...☕️🌹
Jim Hilliker
Classic for sure! Some of my older friends who bought this 45 in 1958 have told they wore this record out, as they drive their parents crazy, playing this recording over and over again on their record players. I still love it.
Tanya Walker
This is my current ringtone for the Christmas season. I was a little girl when this was popular in the early 60's. To me, it just wouldn't be Christmas without ❤️
eddiecharlie77
What's Christmas without this hit, Still have the 2&1/2 minute original animated clip on DVD to play for the nieces nephews and grandkids and even some neighborhood kids.
John James
If you play it at 33 1/3 on your stereo you get an idea of what the real, normal, voices sounded like lol
Mohammed Cohen
...I drove my dad crazy by wanting to hear this song all the time...he wouldn't play it - now I can dig why...it gets old right quick for adults....you can pretty much tell what year this was made by the reference to the hula hoop craze...and my age because I remember it...
Patricia Reeves
A really fun song! 🎉🎉🎉

The only Christmas song to top The Pop Chart between 1952 ("I saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" Jimmy Boyd) and 2019 ("All I Want For Christmas is You" Mariah Carey)
