The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.
Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.
Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Pröfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.
Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.
Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.

You better not cry
You better not pout
I'm telling you why
Santa Claus is coming to town
Santa Claus is coming to town
Santa Claus is coming to town
Checking it twice;
Gonna find out who's naughty or nice.
Santa Claus is coming to town
Santa Claus is coming to town
Santa Claus is coming to town
He sees you when you're sleeping
He knows when you're awake
He knows if you've been bad or good
So be good for goodness sake
With little tin horns and little toy drums
Rooty toot toots and rummy tum tums
Santa Claus is coming to town
Santa Claus is coming to town
Santa Claus is coming to town
He sees you when you're sleeping
He knows when you're awake
He knows if you've been bad or good
So be good for goodness sake
Goodness sake
You better watch out
You better not cry
You better not pout
I'm telling you why
Santa Claus is coming to town
Santa Claus is coming to town
Santa Claus is coming
Santa Claus is coming
Santa Claus is coming to town
(Coming to town)
Santa's a busy man he has no time to play
He's got millions of stockings to fill on Christmas day

The song "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" is a classic Christmas song that has been sung by various artists over the years. The lyrics are addressed to children who are told to watch out, not cry, not pout, and to be good for goodness’ sake because Santa Claus is coming to town. The song begins by reminding the children that Santa keeps a list of those who are naughty or nice, and he is checking it twice. The second verse reinforces the notion of Santa’s omniscience, asserting that he sees them when they are sleeping and knows when they are awake. Santa Claus is held up as a moral arbiter, with the promise of presents for the good children and lumps of coal for the naughty ones.
The playful and imaginative language of the song reinforce its sense of childlike wonder and excitement, with the mention of little tin horns, little toy drums, rooty toot toots and rummy tum tums. The closing verse repeats the earlier warnings to watch out, not to cry or pout, and to be good for goodness’ sake. It also highlights the song's central message that Santa Claus is coming to town, which means the start of the festive season is nigh.
Overall, "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" is a cheerful, upbeat tune that fills listeners with holiday spirit, with its catchy melody, playful lyrics, and joyous vibe setting the tone for Christmas.
