The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.
Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.
Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Pröfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.
Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.
Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.
We Are All Made of Stars

Growing in speed
Can't fight the future
Can't fight what I see
People they come together
People they fall apart
No one can stop us now
Efforts of lovers
Left in my mind
I sing in the reaches
We'll see what we find
People they come together
People they fall apart
No one can stop us now
'Cause we are all made of stars
People they come together
People they fall apart
No one can stop us now
'Cause we are all made of stars
Slow slow slow, come come
Someone come come come
Even love is goin' 'round
You can't ignore what is goin' 'round
Slowly rebuilding
I feel it in me
Growing in numbers
Growing in peace
People they come together
People they fall apart
No one can stop us now
'Cause we are all made of stars
People they come together
People they fall apart
No one can stop us now
'Cause we are all made of stars
People they come together
(People they come together)
People they fall apart
(People they fall apart)
No one can stop us now
(No one can stop us now)
'Cause we are all made of stars
(We are all made of stars)
We are all made of stars
People they come together
We are all made of stars
(People they fall apart)
We are all made of stars
(No one can stop us now)
'Cause we are all made of stars
(We are all made of stars)
The lyrics of "We Are All Made of Stars" by Various Artists talk about the unstoppable force of humanity and the inevitability of the future. The phrase "Growing in numbers, growing in speed" suggests that there is a momentum building in society that cannot be easily slowed or stopped. The singer accepts this, stating "Can't fight the future, can't fight what I see."
The chorus provides a sense of unity, with the line "People they come together, people they fall apart" acknowledging the ebb and flow of human relationships. However, it's clear that the overall message is one of positivity and hope, with the repeated refrain "No one can stop us now, 'cause we are all made of stars." This statement suggests that, at our core, all humans are connected and part of something bigger than ourselves.
The verses suggest that even when love and relationships end, there is a sense of something "left in my mind" that keeps the singer reaching out for something new. The repeated use of the phrase "people they come together, people they fall apart" reinforces the idea that life is cyclical and relationships come and go, but ultimately we are all part of something greater than ourselves.
