The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.

Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.

Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Pröfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.

Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.

Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.

Love this song!!! I'm 38 now, this song came out the year my father was born in 58' it was technically an oldie already by time I was born, but I've always liked oldies and I remember dancing to this on repeat as a kid, and I still have it on my playlist for my car today. Brings back good memories.. I was def born in the wrong era. Music just isn't what it used to be. I WISH I had been around back then to enjoy this stuff fresh.

And I almost hit the gold mine. This song was modified in the lyrics in the 1977 "Grease" movie, during the Rydell HS dance contest scene. The new version of that "Willie" hand-jive song is faster and a bit more electrified but the jump blues and the New Orleans up-tempo swing styles in that number were kept quite intact.

Johnny Otis had a radio show, broadcast out of Russian River. I listened to that on many Saturdays, back when I lived in Northern California. He would dig out all kinds of deep cuts from back in the day. A few hours of great music every week.

This song takes me back to my early teenage years, 14, when Rock n Roll was "the music of the Devil", but it was a teenager's music. If you didn't like Rock n Roll, you were square, Period. 57-58-59 were magical years for me. Great music and great cars. A lot of classic songs came out that era, and makes me emotional when I hear them. Jukeboxes was only place to select your own kind of music. Few kids had a music library, it was always limited, and stereo was available only for the privileged. A struggling era but still magical because I experienced it.

Consider the wealth of pure, RAW great music (forget the efforts to format, package, sanitize etc) we've been blessed with, from SO MANY ARTISTS that we're still moved and dancing to (think the original version, and try NOT TO THINK of that other version, handed off to another producer/arranger, and then handed to GLADYS KNIGHT AND THE PIPS!
REALLY GOOD MUSIC will even outlast us. People will find it, and yes some will attempt to plagiarize it. Your job is to see that Johnny, Chuck, Bo, Muddy, John Lee et al are remembered for their musical genius!

Agreed! I'm an old-school jazz head and funk guy, and I adore big 20+ piece bands creating a damn symphony of intricate melody and unique rythyms, but even so watching someone strip all that down and pull excellent groove and rythym out of a couple cheap pieces layin round the house and passionate musicians to hold them reminds me what making music's all about, dig? These cats took an old guitar, a shaker, maybe a strippy second-hand drum setup and sang into a can and caught lightning in a bottle. That's the SPIRIT baby. Damn fine tune with not a damn penny behind it. Just some soul and a groove, brother. 🤙

A rock classic in the golden 1950s. I can never get enough of this one. At 36 some may have thought of Johnny as a little over the hill at the time but he made this song rock. Hit the top 40 on 6/30/1958 and stayed there for 15 weeks.
Imagine hearing this while cruising in your '55 Chevy down the boulevard.

This is from the 1959 film, “Juke Box Rhythm,” and features the swing dance couple, Gil & Nikki Brady. There’s also a version from The Johnny Otis Show (1958) with Marie Adams and Three Tons of Joy demonstrating how to do the hand jive, using the basic movements I remember learning. Good stuff!

Watching a blues guitar instructional video from Keith Wyatt... he showed how Bo Diddley played the guitar, and I started thinking... hmm I've heard that before. In fact, I remember it from Sha Na Na, which played the hand jive song (among others) on the movie Grease. A little search and I found this video :) Check the song "Bo Diddley" from Bo Diddley, which is 3 years older than Johnny Otis.. and you'll see what I mean ;)

I expected to see the dancers do a little Hand Jive action. The 'hand roll' is only the 1st move. It's usually followed by horizontal flat hand movements, switching the upper and lower hands, a touching of your elbows with the opposing index finger, followed by a mimic of throwing a shovel full of dirt over each shoulder! C'mon dancers...get with it and give us a little hand jive!

He started as a drummer, but with his own band he was able to play what he wanted, piano and vibes, both of which are considered percussion instruments. And if he wanted to just mimic playing, it was his call.
