When I was a kid, 20-something years ago, I remember spending joyful hours just rooting through my parents’ vast collection of old vinyl records that had been released sometime around Ancient Rome—fabulous LPs and singles, mainly from the 50s, 60s and 70s (music that pretty much defines much of my tastes to this day).

Then I found a whole load of Phil Spector produced singles. Good Lord, there were so many outstanding songs. I think Brian Wilson was right on the money when he said The Ronettes’ “Be My Baby” might be the greatest pop song of all time (quite something when you consider the competition from other Spector songs alone).

As I listened to those tracks, so many of them blew me away, I’d never heard pop songs sound like that. I carried on rummaging through those vinyl records, until (under roughly 23 feet of dust, cobwebs and bones) I found his wonderful “A Christmas Gift for You” record, which included this sublime song.

To me this is quite simply the sound of Christmas—I think it always will be. Don’t get me wrong, I adore most of the traditional carols too, but it’s always Darlene Love, the voice of this fabulous lady, who can instantly transport me to Christmas—from anywhere in space and time—within just a few bars of this matchless song (and Darlene’s “All Alone on Christmas” written by E Streeter Steve Van Zandt is a more than worthy successor, as well).

Sometimes you get a perfect recipe: sublime song, peerless singer, the right musicians, and inspired production—and still somehow more than the sum of its parts.

To anyone who’s read this unnecessarily long post, I truly hope you have a beautiful holiday season full of joy with the people you love. Here’s wishing you a glorious 2020 and the best of everything.

The snow's coming down
(Christmas)
I'm watching it fall
(Christmas)
Lots of people around
(Christmas)
Baby please come home
The church bells in town
(Christmas)
All ringing in song
(Christmas)
Full of happy sounds
(Christmas)
Baby please come home
They're singing "Deck The Halls"
But it's not like Christmas at all
'Cause I remember when you were here
And all the fun we had last year
Pretty lights on the tree
(Christmas)
I'm watching them shine
(Christmas)
You should be here with me
(Christmas)
Baby please come home
They're singing "Deck The Halls"
But it's not like Christmas at all
'Cause I remember when you were here
And all the fun we had last year
If there was a way
(Christmas)
I'd hold back this tear
(Christmas)
But it's Christmas day
Please, please, please, please
Please, please, please, please
Please, please, please, please
Please, please
Baby, please come home
(Christmas)
Baby, please come home
(Christmas)
Baby, please come home
(Christmas)
Baby, please come home
(Christmas)
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah
(Christmas)
(Christmas)
Please come home
(Christmas)

You owe me BIGtime garam jalebi

Tears so powerful... The story behind this song is so epic. This song played in the background when my dad came home from Vietnam in Christmas 1974.
