So, a few months later, and after watching tutorials for many hours, I am still stuck with Kontakt Player + Middle East instruments,
trying in vain to connect one of my keyboards as midi-controller and also in vain to get Middle East Instruments into Cubase
The only thing I can do is get Middle East instruments into Kontakt player, controlled by my mouse over the ridiculous virtual keyboard
Additionally, each new attempt ends up being unable to use Cubase , since all those manipulations end up by disconnecting input/output
I am totally lost.
Any idea ? Does anyone knows a clear tutorial ?
So far, only consolation is that i bought Middle East Instruments for $50 on black friday, not much money lost...but for nothing it's frustrating
BTW : among the multiple tutorials I watched on You Tube , one stated clearly that "Kontakt" is very difficult to use
Ideally, I would love being able to let down this thing and get a Roland 7 Integra module...but it s not cheap , as soon as i can, i think i would get it...unless a miracle happens to salvage my interaction with Native Instruments

Music industry. .. gaming industry. .. xyz industry. .. they are always trying to make you buy the latest version, the latest updates. . Then, there are a few exceptions, as always. ..
For example, when steinberg releases a new feature for Cubase, if it's never 100% implemented the first time. We will need the next update.. and the next. . In order to have it 100% working. One of the numerous examples. . The offline processing. . On v10, they added the 'favorites' option. Next v10.5 or v11, they will add another core functionality. .. and the worse is, they will call these new minor additions 'a new feature'.... when the favorite option was such an obvious thing, that should have been implemented in the v9.5...

The industries love removing any retrocompatibility a product may have. ..
Ok, we have great companies, like cockos reaper, who release a ton of new features between a v5.0.0.0 and v5.9.9.9, and don't wait for the next paid version x.5, to add new features, like Cubase does...
..but the majority. .. let's remove 32bit here... let's upgrade the new engine. ..let's add a major change...so we can call it v2.0... or v3.0... or v4.0.. to force people to upgrade.
When we have thousands of developers releasing 32bit versions, which work perfectly well. . And suddenly steinberg disables the 32bit support.. not ALL devs can afford to update all their plug-ins, all versions, aax, au, vst, vst3... and users are left with one choice : they no longer can use /install that plug-in...and are forced to buy the $50 - $150 upgrade.

Great, thanks for the video! Also if cubase implements something like "chunks" in DP that works great for film composers and versions of cues and a smart tool to sync to picture concerning alternative tempo maps, well then it's the DAW for a film composer by far!!! would you agree or not?

I just want to easy zoom in/out vertically in editors by mouse scroll. This threat is as old as world, and Steinberg didn't do anything with it. Scrolling on left side keyboard, or using something like Alt+scroll isn't so difficult to program by developers, is it?

I really liked your video but I'm a bit confused about the Kontakt 5/6 template issue. I have large orchestral templates in Cubase that were built using K5 (with one articulation/instance per track) and as far as I know I now have to rebuild all these templates from scratch because of the name change to the .dll - I'm not quite sure if you were saying you found a solution/workaround? Could you please clarify?

No what I was saying is from now on that wont be an issue as its just called Kontakt not K5 or K4 etc. So yes you have to rebuild your template but next time you wont

Just a thought...Does Nuendo allow you to export video with audio? I've never used Nuendo, so I have no idea.
If Nuendo does allow you to do this, then this may explain Steinberg's reluctance to implement it in Cubase.

@skylightmusic showreel I know, it's totally insane. This is not a "boutique" feature for a working composer, this is a NECESSITY. It seriously adds probably 30-40% to my work load to have to close out, toss the picture and cues into another DAW/Editing suite to make the QTs necessary. Really fucking painful Steinberg, real pain.

No, unfortunately it does not either. Composers have been BEGGING for this feature for years now, it's incredibly frustrating.

Wonder if the resampling is better. Cubase SRC has been a weak spot for years; most other DAWs have better sample rate conversion (including Wavelab 6 - 9.5).

Guy M yeah. There are bugs that have been about for years. I found one in ozone 8 when using the reference feature is crashes Cubase. There is a known bug in superior Drummer 3 which I discovered and alerted them to a year ago that hard crashes Cubase and they refuse to do anything about it. So plugin manufacturers need a kick too

As far as I know, Cubase 7.5 has the ability to replace audio in film clips and export them.
Can anyone else confirm this?

@Matthew James This is why I still use Cubase 8.5 on Windows 7 (Pro 64 bit) even though I already have licenses for Cubase 9.5 & 10. I'm also waiting to see the new Daw Bench score for Cubase 10; when Cubase 9 came out, the efficiency nosedived, allowing way less FX & VI's to run at the same time.
Apparently the transition to the new video engine is causing headaches at Steinberg; you even have to buy an extra license to play back DNR encoded video.
Apparently Steinberg is also struggling to accommodate multiple OS types & versions as well; the required system info for 10 starts w Windows 8.1 (though many Windows 7 users have said it runs fine on their systems). You're probably right - it's a codec licensing issue (and a codec version issue) that could take a good while to sort out.

@Guy M This is just maddening at this point, to have to open up a video editor, Logic or PT to send cues to directors/producers is absurd. It's obviously a codec licensing issue of some sort, where the cost of implementing the feature outweighs the community complaints, major bummer.

Yup - it was a feature up until an update to 9. They had to replace the video engine because of a problem with support for quicktime on windows and the feature disappeared and has not returned.

Let's hope they make Batch Resaves in Kontakt backward-compatible. I made the mistake and used Kontakt 6 to batch resave a couple of libraries after having moved them to a new SSD. After that, Kontakt 5 could not open them anymore and I also could not run a new batch resave. Since I am using Kontakt 5 in most templates, I had to choose between redownloading and reinstalling those libraries and replacing all Kontakt 5 instances using those instruments with Kontakt 6 in those templates, including replacing, rerouting, and reloading all instrument instances. I ended up not using Kontakt 6 and just sticking to 5 for as long as I can. So, if they now override old versions of Kontakt and the same problem occurs, we would be screwed.

The "marvellous monitors" are Dynaudio M2s and I dont really use them. I compose and mix on a smallish pair of genelecs which are much better for day to day stuff. No treatment and I mostly work in my shed so im not normally scoring in the larger studio these days

re replacing audio in video - you can do this in Cubase 8.5 - and your C10 licence allows you to download and use 8.5 if you don't already have it.

Hi Guy- I’m currently a cubase user but having seen the edm/production focused updates over the last few years, i am thinking of switching from cubase to DP/pro tools/logic. I was wondering if you could shed some light as to why you switched from DP to cubase- was there a massive glaring issue i haven’t spotted in the demo version? Thanks in advance.

Cubase is cross platform so I save thousands running it on a 14 core PC compared to an overpriced mac pro. Im not therefore beholden to Apple. That's a big deal. There are so many workflow things that are a load better on Cubase. Exporting stems all in one go saves literally days of time. Logs of reasons. Logic is really good but has issues on a very big template. Pro tools - dont go there for midi. Too many problems and limitations.

Guy, it is always good to see you. You lift my spirits and you make me feel like I'm not the only wacky guy out there in this film composing business of ours. As for Cubase 10...I'm just not impressed AT THIS TIME. I think 9.5 is better for film composers and Cubase reluctance to let us bounce the movie is more than just a little irritating. Do they need Hans Zimmer to go over to Deutschland and stomp on them to wake them up?! Anyway, again, it is always good to see you on the screen. I like the elephant, too. LOL!

Once you have (downloaded &) installed it, it should be in your plugins folder. If it isn't, go into VST Plug In Manager, click VST Instruments tab, if it's not in the list, check the Blacklist tab, if it's not there, open the 'gear' icon - Next to VST2 Plugin Path Settings, hit the + sign and navigate to C:\Program Files\Native Instruments\VSTPlugins 64 bit. Then at the top of the Plugin Manager page, click the refresh/scan icon, it should now recognise Kontakt and add it to your list of VSTi's

For MIDI composing, Cubase is it. I’m a Studio One user that converted. To be honest I still use Studio One for analog projects (recently recorded a vocalist and Yamaha C5 Grand with two mics). Studio One is so fluid and fast and has such an easy UI there’s nothing like it. But for huge orchestral templates or scoring to video utilizing full multi core power, Cubase all the way.

My Kontakt templates remain as I created them at Kontakt 5, so I'm not sure what he's talking about there.

So once I upgrade my templates (not just the app) to Kontakt (6) I won't have to rebuild my templates with subsequent updates. ...in that that case, per the concerns in the video, I'll be looking for a way to fool the updater to preserve the previous version of Kontakt so I can test the new version before committing to my templates. cause, yeah that could mess y up. Thx!

Exactly - if you want to upgrade to 6 you will have to reload all the samples and rebuild the template as your DAW sees it as a new plugin. Because they have now dropped the 4,5,6 thing it's just Kontkat. Therefore from here on in, every update will overwrite the last version so the template will update with out having to be rebuilt.

I switched from Studio One to Cubase in March, and the list of new features in Cubase 10 are bit-by-bit recreations of what’s in Studio One already. But the traffic runs the other way too. The Studio One dev team used to work for Steinberg so a lot got brought over. Both are great DAWs, Cubase for MIDI, Studio zone for classic analog recording with mics, and EDM.

Brother studio one and cubase were created by the same programmer so yes the change is identical and the sound quality is the same only thing cubase is more dynamic and fatter

Vari Audio didn't sound impressive at all. It looks like it still have major issues distinguishing the fundamental, and the more direct methods of adjustment, though potentially a time saver, doesn't strike me as impressive. Before I started using Melodyne, I got used to Variaudio in Cubase 6.5; I saw nothing in this video that convinces me that Vari Audio in 10 is all that much better.

Hang on...what actually is the point of bezier curves for Midi CC when all the data is written as points on a scale from 1-127. It's not a continuum so there's no point is there other than to make it look nice?

To be honest it doesn't bother me unduly, but apparently, there still aren't bezier curves in the midi CC automation, just audio. I can see why that's a problem but i think most people would struggle to hear it.

@Adee Liyanage - Thank you so much for your input here!! I have Cubase LE AI Elements 9, (which came with my Audient id14 audio interface. I switched from Mbox2 to Audient). I've had Cubase for a year or so now, and when I first 'opened' a new project, I was so confused by the program format, that I didn't try learning it, thus I stayed with Pro Tools. Now, however, I want to dabble with it, and maybe upgrade if I find it has more features as compared with PT. I will check on those items you listed: vari audio, user friendly cpu optimization, easy to deal with latency, vocalign built in, colored tracks, easy to make beats, etc. Thanks again!!

I still have to work in pro tools sometimes. even so i bought cubase is giving much more to u than pro tools things like. vari audio, much more user friendly cpu optimization, easy to deal with latency, vocalign built in. even cubase looks cool( not that it matters much). but pro tools still has a color to to the audio ( even i don't like to call it coloration). easy to make beats in cubase ( but not easy as fl studio of course. one main downside to cubase is it only supports 64 bit ,but if you compare to pro tools its not even an issue. but i'm still use to the mixer in pro tools. but any way , i just bought cubase 10 for my personal use . love it !!!

It is better to have several laptops to be adjusted to any kind of Cubase and NI DAW/VSTs/plugins whatever version you wish to work on for your mental health.

Depends what kind of music you make. For EDM etc FL is better but film scoring its got to be Cubase over FL. Use both! Lots of people do.

I upgraded from Cubase 9.5 to 10 but the weird thing is it didn't upgrade 9.5 to 10 , it added 10 as a new daw so I got both on my pc. When I open a .cpr file it opens in 9.5 not 10 so i'm not sure if that's right.
P.S Guy M, if you wasn't a musician you would have been a comedian, I love watching your vids cos not only do we learn but we laugh too lol.

Or you could simply open you newer DAW and navigate to the project folder. Once it's been loaded into the new version, it'll show up in Recent Projects as normal

Cubase has always installed a new version next to the old ones. You keep all the versions which is cool. To get by default the .cpr files to open with cubase 10 you need to tell your operating system that the default application for .cpr files is now cubase 10 instead of cubase 9.5 .

TOTALLY agree guy Cubase should allow audio to be printed onto video ive been begging Steinberg for this for many many years and they still wont do it for whatever reason..but I think they need to implent it very very soon because more and more people are creating vids not just movie directors but youtubbers..djs..etc and its very frustrating to import a vid into Cubase edit your music to be intime with the vid then having to eport that then import it into another program and you have to then sync it with that !! it wastes time and energy and in this day and age it shouldn't be happening !!!

fingers crossed guy they do implement I too hope it comes in version 10 I bought it on day one release and there are things I like and things I hate about it one thing im like you the first versions always suck and are buggy as hell and Cubase 10 is very bad and full of bugs which hopefully will get ironed out soon.

i completely agree with you guy,as the upgrade is not free i will not be uprading any time soon,if i want to use wavetable,then i will use vengeance avenger
naturally,everybody will have to upgrade in the future as the newer libraries wont be compatible anymore with kontakt 5
i had cubase 4,i now use fl studio,this has also the pitch shift thing :-) ,and its less costly then cubase

Well, it depends of what are you doing. I tried to use FL Studio in orchestral music and is so... inappropriate. I learned more in Cubase within 2 days, than in FL Studio in about a year. Yes, FL has free updates, but also almost nothing in it. But in Cubase you can see progress and simplicity in your workflow.

I don't think Kontakt users really will have much of a choice sooner or later as new libraries come along and ..... Im looking forward to hearing what people will do with it though after all it is the most of important piece of software I own next to VSL EP and Cubase

I hate this version of cubase. Pops and cracks, real time peaks and that with 7 synths loaded. In 9.5 no problems. I have an i7 7820x 16gb ram. No idea what's wrong :/

OK this might be what happens to me sometimes. When they release new versions it does more stuff and actually slightly increases the cpu hit as a result. When you run a DAW you are probably maxing it out so the update pushes iut over the edge and result is carnage. Check the task manager and if the CPU is much over 50% that's your problem.
