Jog Along Bess
Vashti Bunyan Lyrics

Jog along Bess hop along May
Squeak along Blue it's a walk along day
It's a long road and weary are we
Bubble on kettle and make us all some tea

Once there was a gypsy man
Selling flowers from a baker's van
Bess she pulled him round the town
Pulled her wagon all old and brown
Till one day we took her away
Painted her wagon bright and gay
Now she finds she's traveling
North No more wandering back and forth

Once there was an Afghan hound
Loved by no one and pushed around
Tied up in a stable yard
Tangled and timid and howling hard
Till one day we took her away
Called her Magog shortened to May
She hurt a paw made it sore
Now she runs on three legs instead of four

There lived a dog in London Town
With one ear up and the other ear down
The neighbors said he mustn't bark
The only grass he knew was in Hyde Park
Till one day we took him away
Now Blue bounces through fields of hay
But he sits and squeals like a squeaky wheel
When the wheels are rolling that's how he feels

Little green wagon in a deep blue sky
Wheels like dandelions passing by
With a picture by Sam a painting by John
And a bonnie black hoss to lead you along
Lucky green wagon you were raggedy brown
Now there is red at the hem of your gown
We brought you a pumpkin brought you a mouse
We wished very hard and you gave us a house

Jog along Bess hop along May
Squeak along Blue it's a walk along day

It's a long road and weary are we
Bubble on kettle and make us all some tea

Overall Meaning

"Jog Along Bess" is a whimsical and happy song sung by Vashti Bunyan about three animals: Bess (a horse), May (an Afghan hound) and Blue (a dog). The song begins with "Jog along Bess hop along May, Squeak along Blue it's a walk along day." The animals are walking along a long and tiring road and are feeling weary, so Bunyan sings out a request for the kettle to be bubbled on and for tea to be made for all.

The song then tells the story of Bess, a horse that used to pull a gypsy man around the town in an old and brown wagon. One day, Bunyan and her friends took Bess away and painted her old wagon to make it bright and cheerful. Since then, Bess has been traveling northwards without wandering back and forth.

Next, the song tells of May, an Afghan hound that was unloved and tied up in a stable yard. Bunyan and her friends rescued May and named her Magog, short for May. May now travels with Bess and Blue, hobbling on three legs instead of four because of a sore paw.

Lastly, Bunyan sings about Blue, a dog with one ear up and the other ear down that lived in London town. Blue was not allowed to bark by his neighbors, and the only grass he knew was in Hyde Park. However, Bunyan and her friends took him away and now he bounces through fields of hay, sitting and squealing like a squeaky wheel as the wheels roll.

Overall, "Jog Along Bess" is a light-hearted and playful song about the adventures of three animals that have been rescued from unfortunate circumstances and now travel together as friends.

I was flipping radio stations and I found this song (never heard it before) so I blasted it on full volume to see what my dad would do. He stared at me like I was insane and was like "what the heck are you listening to!?!?!?" and I said "I have no idea but it's cute!" so then I went home to look it up on youtube and...well here I am.
