A great time period. Wish I was there. WW2 was over, cost of living was low (but still the same in a way), cars were made to last/looked good and the music was easy to listen/dance to.

The War was just over. A soldier comes back to the States to see his girl. How much this song must have meant to them. But what about the girl whose soldier didn't come back? When I really think about it, it makes my heart very sad to think about the soldier that was gone forever, and the people that loved him. This is my favorite Vaughn Monroe song. Thanks for posting.

Stanley Costello , yes, when you consider the time, at the close of WWII, in which this song was written, it takes on added significance. Although performed at a much later time, Diane Keaton’s version of the song captures the poignant release of angst in the lyric.
